dual mass flywheel

    anyone ever have to replace one of these on jeep, pajero in my case..is it very expensive and what are the consequences of it going?

    I had the same issue last year at approx 87-88K miles. Mine vibrated away for a few months before it packed up totally. When it goes, it will be like a clutch slipping, you'll see the revs rising intermittently for a while, then you'll have no drive at all. I was on my way home on an approx 20 mile journey when I first noticed the revs rising. I struggled to get in the driveway at home and had to take a run to get it up on a beavertail Ifor Williams car transporter to get it to the garage.
    They usually replace the clutch as well as the flywheel and once they have the parts, it can be done in a (full) day. You're talking around a total cost of €2800 to €3000. For a known issue with Pajeros, the guys in the garage said they never before replaced one in a SWB, but that they had done a good few LWB's owned by fellas who were doing lots of towing.

    to be honest im fair unhappy with pajero..only has 107k kms done..only has a few loads to tow every year..it broke down twice under warranty, clutch went dead both times, master cylinder first..slave cylinder 2nd time..although i believed it was never right after first time.. and now this. always serviced as well..what i notice in mine is a slight shudder/rattle when starting..gears etc seem ok so far

    When the DMF on mine was on the way out, she'd start vibrating when accelerating between 1000 and 2000 revs in 4th or 5th. I wouldn't get excited about it until that happens, as you'll then have a few months to fundraise for it! :D
    I was disgusted with mine when I had to spend that kind of money on it, but I'm otherwise very happy with it and while I'm careful about servicing it, it gets plenty of welly on a daily basis.

    we had a pajero import swb about 120k Kms and the dmf failed , we got the fly wheel converted to a solid one

    total cost was €1500 , (including clutch d and pp and rb)

    we sold that jeep and it is still ok but very noisy.

    The only real solution is to buy a good old LandRover! My 1961 Series II is still going strong, will pull anything anywhere, forget all this modern rubbish with dmf etc etc . All you need to fix it is a very big hammer and a big screwdriver!!

    Solid flywheel can be bought up north for less than a grand arund 700 i think, then labour, helped a mate do 1 in a pajero recently

    not a jeep now . But we put genuine dual mass flywheel and genuine clutch into a 2002 vw passat for 1200€ .
    Thats useing genuine vw parts .

    it was going for a while thou when idleing out of gear it vibrated the car something unreal. only had 90,000 miles .

    Check eurocarparts.com

    I had to do the DMF in my frontera last year, genuine part was €2,500+vat cheapest spurious was €1,500+vat

    got one from eurocarparts for €750 inc vat and shipping, made by LUK, the same people who made the original for GM.


    we're being robbed in this country.

    does this problem with the "dmf" apply to auto pajeros?? my spec is a 2004 auto with 90k miles

    Highly unlikely, cant speak directly for the pajero, but auto's dont normally have normal flywheels at all, and there would be no point in a dual mass one, the torque converter would smooth any vibrations itself.

    Any simple things that can be done to extend the life of DMF,- ie, not letting the jeep labour etc.

    Not really, they are a defective technology from the start.

    is that for the dmf only or is he doing the clutch as well? you are well stick a clutch in as well

    Sounds cheap if it's including the clutch. Has yours started vibrating yet while driving?

    well a local chap today told me parts (clutch and flywheel ) would be 2k outside of labour so more likey the first crowd didnt include clutch..must check again..only thing i notice is shudder on start up

    Mine occasionally gives a shudder at startup too, even with the DMF replaced, so I wouldn't jump the gun and spend money just because it might go pop on you. In my opinion, wait till she stards vibrating on acceleration, then you know you've trouble a-brewing

    I know where someone put a solid flywheel kit "replacement" from the North, into and 05 Skoda 1.9 tdi and it cracked the gearbox housing, be careful

    When it went in my Focus it sounded like I had a bag of nails in the engine!
