I stayed in Ad Place. It was really nice but may be more suited towards couples & was expensive.

Wherever you choose, I recommend staying close to St Marks Square & Rialto. If you are there for a week, you don't want to be getting on the Vaporetto (Water Bus) every day, to travel up & back from the main sights.

Are you planning on doing any day trips to other places? Venice is beautiful & you'll have a great time but a week there might be a bit much. Here's a useful interactive map. When you choose where to stay you can use it to actually see how to walk to/from your hotel from the closest Vaporetto stop or find your way to all the sights. Some of the fun of Venice though is just wandering around, so don't use this map too much or you'll feel like you know it all before you get there :p

With a budget of euro 100-175 per room, you have wide options to choose from. You can check out Starhotels Splendid Venice, Hotel Royal San Marco Venice and Best Western Hotel Bisanzio Venice.
Looking at your budget, you may select Hotel Royal San Marco Venice. It is centrally located within a stone's throw of St Mark's Basilica. The city's main attractions, heritage, exclusive shopping districts are at a stone throw away. The only problem is with the quality of food. But this problem won't be a deterrent since all major restaurants and food markets are located quite close to the hotel.

We stayed at the Bisanzio two years ago. I can recommend it - very central, quiet, good guys (well one of them anyway) behind the desk, small & relaxed.

If you ever change your mind on your budget, a cheaper option is Alla Vite Dorata.

    See my review on tripadvisor

Would definitely go there again. The only thing your extra money will do is get you a hotel closer to Piazza San Marco. I'm not entirely certain that's something I'd want. It was nice to get away from the touristy areas.

I stayed in the Hotel Grande Canal in January. I couldn’t recommend it enough, it is closer to the Piazza Roma than to St Marks Sq, but the no 1 waterbus stops outside the hotel, that will drop you to St Marks and Rialto.

    I booked it through Hotels.com

Sorry to hijack this thread, but for those that have been to Venice, would it make much of a difference to stay in Mestre. My budget is lower that harrison fraud so really my choices of places is really low. Because of the length of time we are spending in southern Europe, my budget for my two nights in Venice is about €130 (€65 a night:( ). Plus the bus we are getting to Ljubljana from Venice leaves from Mestre so it might suit. I know nothing about Mestre though:(
