How you've still got a VAT number after a year and a half of non-returns is beyond me.

Speaking as someone who had a scary VAT audit not so long ago, all I can say is, it's not your money, it never will be, and don't use it for cashflow.

I haven't a clue how to work through this problem, all I can say is I hope things work out for you. Clearly, you have recognised the problem, so you don't need anyone lecturing you about the VAT not being yours, etc.

I wonder would your local MABS office be able to help you to work through it and maybe help you to approach Revenue, which you already know you'll have to do eventually. Best thing is to start right away and just try to get a sympathetic hearing from Revenue.

Sorry I can't help more. Does anyone else have any similar experience or any better suggestions?

If your suffering from depression get medically certified from a medical professional, complete all your outstanding returns with the Revenue show them you are making an effort and work out some arrangement with them on these grounds. Explain your situation to the Revenue aswell.
