a drunken encounter with liquid killed off my iphone 3g last week. brought it to a repair shop and was told the main chip has been fried so its beyond repair (at any sort of reasonable cost anyway)

it wasnt insured (it was an unlocked uk phone). my question is... have i any options bar scrapping it.

for instance is it possible to buy applecare cover now for what 80 - 100 quid then get it fixed/replaced under that??

any other suggestions or advice are welcome...

To buy insurance now is fraud.

Secondly the fone has a water sensor which the apple techs use to guage the type of damage that has occurred

I think that was your que to ditch the iPhone 3G and go for iPhone 4 mate, it's served its purpose. ;)

i was talking to a guy tonight who had an incident with dropping his iPhone 3GS down the toilet, he grabbed it out after a few seconds, and he said that it's working fine, was a bit of dampness on the screen but it's gone, but your phone is officially dead?

usually i hear stories that water won't entirely feck the phones up, unless it's salt water.

Water invalidates your Apple warranty. This includes any sweat getting in the port connector (you can check - if the LED in there is pinkish/red then damps got in there). Apple have tried to counter criticism the device is very susceptible to problems when used in the gym etc or other places people sweat a lot (the Fianna Fail backbench for example). However, it's a fudge really. The solution is to make the device more robust in this regard.

yea the technician in the local repair shop says the processor is fried.

i was actually only using the 3G as a stopgap until i could get my hands on an iphone 4. guess i'll have to accelerate that process now...!

to tell the embarrassing truth, the 'water' was actually my own vomit (laugh away). i got extremely pissed, puked in my sleep then woke up to find my iphone sitting on top of the puke-pile.

that means that genius (me) puked and then had the wisdom to leave my iphone down on top of it after. the demon drink eh?

the battery was dead at the time but i picked the phone up and tried to charge it straight away. if i had left it dry out before charging it again i reckon it would still be ok. alas...

Try keeping it close to a heat source eg hot press for a couple days and report back ! Never know

sick is different to water though, its all icky and gunky, and i doubt it'd dry away like water, given the chance, so no, i dont think it'd have made a difference,

anyway, would you continue to use the phone if it had recovered, knowing it was in your sick, my guess is, the stench wouldnt have left it anyway lol
