I see Charlie Bird is back in Ireland on the news this evening. Anyone know when he got back ? Who is taking his place in America ?

Richard Downes is the new Washington correspondent. He's done a few reports already and could have been there for a while for all I know.

I don't quite get why he was there in the first place or why they cover US politics quite as much as they do. Stuff like healthcare reform really doesn't matter a jot to someone living in Ireland

    But it does.

Did he ever get his printer fixed?

I think his USA working holiday experiment proved that RTE lifers can't hack it in the real world. George Lee is another example.

Hope they dont put him at anything dangerous when he'll end up making the whole thing about him. See Dublin riots.

    LOL :D.
That documentary must surely have done a lot of damage to his reputation. I imagine he's too tunnel-visioned to notice though.

Anyone else think Richard Downes looks like Ben from Lost?

Downes is a breath of fresh air after Charlie Bird. The Washington post may not be very important or necessary, but at least Downes can do it competently.

Charlie Bird's role as 'Chief News Correspondent' is totally redundant. They didn't need him or his role when he was in America, and they don't need him now.
