Fat Ps3, about 2 years old, I hardly ever use it because I can't stand the noise
I've looked at the videos on youtube with thermal paste etc. and they're way, way paste my interest/ability level
Can anybody recommend a person/process in Dublin where I can get this poxy thing sorted out?
    Cheers
    K

Hoover around the vents for a bit. It usually helps clear a lot of the lint out.

Play Fallout 3 on a 360 beside it for an hour. Remove 360. You won't hear the PS3 fan.

As a ps3 man I cannot get over how loud xboxs are.

I find the PS3 makes just as much a racket when you are playing a demanding game. There seems to be two fan speeds, quiet as a mouse for the menu and blu rays and 360 levels of noise during games.

My PS3 at it's worst will NEVER match the racket that my 360 makes. It's like a hovercraft that occasionally gets caught in barbed wire.

Try what heebusjeebus said about hoovering the back, Kinch.

This, playing MW2 of GOW3 and the thing sounds likes its about to take off, playing blu-rays and dvds its whisper quiet, with my old xbox I used to turn it on the heat the room at night :pac:

I find that my PS3 only goes mental after ages of play. Lately though when playing red dead the fan kicks in after 20 minutes. Honestly I think it might be the weather; the room I'm playing it in is hotter because of the Summer. I never have this issue in Winter!

OP try putting the PS3 in a more ventilated area, maybe that'll help.

My ps3 fan never kicked up no matter what happened, problem was it died of YLOD prob due to a faulty heat sensor so if your ps3 is making noise be grateful that the fans are working :P The noise of my 360 fans and disc drive are unbelievable when compared with a ps3 though

i never hear the fan going as the sound from the TV would always mask it.

Don't have a slim and my fats sound is masked by other stuff like a very loud HDD on a sky box, but how can the the slim be louder are you sure it's not full of dust.

yeh positive, its just noisier than the fat. possibly coz theres less casing and bits to insulate the sound

Varies from PS3 to PS3.........none of them are "silent", a term which tends to be thrown around far too often.

The summer weather does tend to fluctuate the fan noise more quickly than normal, so its vital to keep the ventilation in good shape......especially with prolonged sessions.
Fan noise is pretty subjective, and I would consider myself fairly picky about it across most devices, from consoles, PCs, SkyHD etc, but I would say for my modern consoles in same rack setup : - quiet to loud
    1. - PS3 Slim (even with the settling in sounds of the casing)
    2. - 250gb Jasper 360 (without gameplay from DVD)
    3. - 60gb EU Launch PS3 (at loudest fan speed)
    4. - 250gb Jasper 360 (about even with the 60gb PS3 with gameplay from DVD)
    5. - 60gb Jap Launch PS3 (at loudest fan speed) - increased over the years more than the EU one
    6. - 20gb EU Launch 360 (gameplay from DVD or HDD) - by far the loudest
