Taking a few days break in Killarney in a few weeks time and was wondering where are the good spots to play, within 30 minutes of the town.I've been checking out a few websites and Beaufort looks fairly nice.Any opinions?

Played Beaufort 5 years ago and it was nice enjoyable track to play.

    Not too difficult either.

Mahonys and Kileen in Killarney golf club are good, dont know how the availiblity in Kileen with the Irish Open being there in a few weeks.
Kenmare GC is in good nick at the moment, then there is Ring of Kerry just outside Kenmare but have heard that the greens arent in the best state.
Beaufort is a good course and looks in good condition. Dooks is a links course near Kilorigin and is also worth alook.
Enjoy your stay, you should have plenty there to choose.

Would recommend Killarney, Killeen course, first of all anyway and it should be in super condition with the Irish Open coming up. Of the others close to Killarney, Dooks is a hidden gem and if you like links golf that is a must play if you are in the area.

I have heard good things about Beaufort since they went through the rework on the course, the usual suspects like Tralee and BallyB come to mind but not sure if they are within 30 minutes of Killarney - maybe a bit further. You are pretty much spoilt for choice in Kerry anyway, some super tracks in that part of the country - enjoy!

Dooks are advertising an open comp on Mondays and Tuesdays for €25 which is a fab course. Open singles in Mahoneys point (25 euro I think) on July 14th 17th & 18th Aug . Beaufort would also have open days not sure when but check with club. Dooks or Mahoneys are both lovely
Also Ross golf club is a 9 hole in the race course in Killarney and is a nice tricky course but if the races are on it will be closed

    Click links for photos.

Personally, I'd avoid Mahony's Point. Great views, but the course is not worth the price you pay. Killeen or nothing, in my opinion.

Beaufort is gentle and relaxing, right under the Reeks so you get the views as well.

Dooks has the best views of any course in Ireland, but it is tricky so it depends on what kind of challenge you're after.

Castleisland is a possibility, but not the most exciting.

No one has mentioned Skellig Bay in Waterville, which is a great course and plenty of room to play (after holes 3 to 5) with big greens and views by the dozen. Maybe an hour's drive.

Kenmare is two different nines - the old nine is pretty and by the water, the new nine is a bit up and down a sloping field - will mature nicely though.

Thanks Kevin, I'll take that into consideration.Kileen and Dooks would be ideal, and I see you can play Kileen for €80 on a monday and tuesday, bit of a bargain.Dooks is only €55 if you book off the internet. That seems like great value, for 2 great looking courses.

In the event that I didn't find time to play both, which would you suggest?

    Hi there,

There is an Open Day on Friday week, 9th July, at Killeen as part of the Qualifying Series for the Volvo Masters Amateur 2010. Entry fee is just €50 per person including prizes on the day - National Final scheduled for September at Killeen Castle.

Just wondering if anybody has played Kileen course lately. I'm due to play it next Saturday and Sunday with a society/group of friends. Someone who played it 2 weeks ago said it wasn't in as good shape as he expected. He said that the greens are very slow and that it was likely they will leave them slow till August and only give them a close cut before the open.

if you want to play a quick nine holes, then the Castlrose hotel has one of the best 9 holes courses in Killarney and the views are amazing
