My OH is looking for a reliable diesel - she does nearly 150km round trip on her commute, so it'd need to be good on fuel too.

I was surprised that 6 or 7 year old 9-3s are coming in at 5k. Anyone any experience with them? Is there anything better in a similar price range, say 5 to 8k.

Is it the older 2.2L diesel or the newer 1.9L? The 1.9L is a fiat multijet unit and is well-regarded; I haven't driven the 2.2L but it hasn't got great feedback on threads here before not to mention that the tax will be higher.

The 2.2 is very old school, loud and slow. It has a habbit of eating oil also but is a tough unit otherwise.

As for the 1.9L I've heard mixed reports. The good is it's great to drive and after test driving it before in various forms I have to agree.

In terms of bad I've been told by many people (owners and mechanics) that its a dog reliability wise. There is no one weakness and little warning that something is about to go bust.

But if its working right people like it

I was behind a 2.2 today and jeez the stink off it, even on the motorway at 70mph. Overtaking lane was closed so I had to drop way back before I suffered long term health problems.
