Can anyone recommend a place in Dublin to do an upgrade on an iMac? Need to get to 10.5.8 for syncing iPad.

Well you can call into one of the Apple certified repair guys such as Evad, Typetec, Bondi or Mactivate but you will first of all have to find Leopard 10.5 as Apple don't sell 10.5 anymore. Secondly you will find that you will have to pay for the bench time to whatever service desk to install on it as I'd doubt they will install the software without giving you a legitimate copy for restores etc. This will cost you circa €50 per hour for what is as much work as loading a CD into your car; a mugs game at your loss.

If it's an Intel chipped iMac, just buy Snow Leopard for €29 and install it yourself, it's literally a case of stick it in and click :)

I did that but discovered the disk only takes you to Snow Leopard if you've 10.5 installed. It's €167 for the disks to take you from 10.4 straight to Snow Leopard.

Did you actually try it? Because the SL €30 "upgrade" disc will work without 10.5. Afaik the only disc that won't work is the "up-to-date" disc that Apple sold to new Mac users for €10.

Can't get that far as it tells me I haven't enough ram when I load disk, (I've just ordered 2 gigs off crucial.com, hope it gets here quick) but from a call to the Apple Store in Grafton St and a look at the Apple store it's clear that I can't go from 10.4.11 straight to snow unless I buy the full pack for 167. Either way when my ram gets here I'll find out.

It just occurred to me I can use my old iPod as an external hard drive and install it on that, then boot up...can't I?

What machine are you using? I assume it's a white MacBook with 512MB of RAM?

Apple do state that alright, but it's been documented just about everywhere at this stage that it's possible to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 on any machine that meets the hardware requirements. Leopard isn't actually needed (it is required per the licence agreement though).

You can, but I don't think it'll work unless the machine you use to install it meets the system requirements. Really, if you have an Intel Mac (anything from a MacBook up) you won't have a problem once your RAM arrives, there's no need to mess around with iPods.

Will there be any future usage issues arising from upgrading from 10.4 to 10.6 directly?

Should be okay. It's an upgrade in name only. The installer actually replaces your system folder and imports your user information.
