It's been a while since we had a Happy Bokeh Wednesday thread :)

If you think that the one true inalienable definition of bokeh is the circley out of focus blobs of light, that's ok. If you disagree violently and hold that the one true inalienable definition of bokeh is the ineffable 'quality' of the out of focus areas of a picture, that's ok too.

If you like a picture, thank it. If you find yourself apoplectic with rage that a picture has no place on a HBW thread because it doesn't comply with the one true definition of bokeh (see above), count to ten and remember this ;)

Some lensbaby goodness to start with:

Also, any fightin' and the Bokeh Police will get ya (aka @elven). This has actually reminded me of Moriseeee's rival (and contentious) Narrow DoF Friday thread :D

yeeks. How did it end up like that ? Was it a mirror lens ?

yep, 500mm f8. saw it in the window of the camera exchange; secondhand, €100. perfect nick; none of the threads on the lens showed any signs of use. i asked inside about it, and was told 'oh, i'd be wary about that if i were you, you'll find it hard to find a use for it'.
'right, i'll give you €75 for it so.'
    '****, i walked into that one, didn't i?'

I wouldn't normally resurrect a zombie thread, but when fate decrees that you finally get out shooting with your new (old) Helios 44-2 on a Wednesday, well...

    HBW!

Anyone else even slightly annoyed by bokeh? Or perhaps just that some people never seem to produce images without it? Im being fairly pedantic I reckon, but still. Bugs me a bit that background elements are sometimes completely disregarded as "**** it, ill just blur all that out and then this image will seem really artistic" :D

Not sure about the "will seem really artistic" thought but, for me, it's all about what I decided to put in focus and I tend to blur everything else at all times-- I just like it that way-- i suppose everybody sees subjects in different ways

There appears to be a little confusion.

The H is for happy. HBW was born as a place for harmless addicts to sit unobtrusively in a corner on a Wednesday and burble quietly about blurry things.Don't be hatin', we're just trying to make the world a less in focus place. Why can't we all just get along? :)

Or at least start a new thread to discuss the relative merits or otherwise of whatever compositional elements are in or out of favour.

Anyway, I feel dirty, it being Friday and all, but HB, eh, F ;)

I do have to agree with BG's rather over generalised point though. Bokeh has its place and when used well it really enhances the picture but its not always appropriate and can become the photographic equivalent of "drop shadow" for typography.
    Still.. mmmmm bokeh. :)

    What I mean is...

    16809040.jpg

Boring subjects treated to a backdrop of out of focus elements don't make interesting photographs to me. And with attractive and cheap options like the canon 1.8 and something like the 1000D or 500D it seems like shallow DOF photographs of absolutely nothing are everywhere. That's pretty much all I'm getting at. A photograph should have strength with the fstop wide open or stopped down, although it may be slightly better with one or the other it shouldn't make or break a photo. The just my rough opinion and quit frankly, I know feck all about what makes a photograph pleasing to the masses, I just know what I like and what I appreciate :)
