Buying second hand advice

I have my eyes on a second hand car (only around 18 months old). There's a smallish bump/kink on the back bumper where it looks like the previous owner has perhaps hit a bollard. It's the only thing putting me off, to be honest.

My question is, should i make it a condition of any purchase that the bump is fixed? Or would such a request be laughed at/told where to go?

Alternatively should i push for money off?

It gives you something to bargin with....but you would not pay the asking price anyway....I would negotiate the best price you can, and get it repaired myself....the seller will get the cheapest job possible done.
Try to estimate the cost of the repair, deduct it from the amount you would be prepared to pay, and pay no more that.

Thanks John. I'm trading in a car against it so was unsure about my scope for haggling. The dealers all tend to say that as i'm trading in there's not much they can do on price... is that about the size of it?

    There's always room for negotiation.
It's always a question of whether you can hold your nerve and not look too desperate for the car!

I always go in and say I have no trade in and get the best price......then get them to give me a better one with the trade in. Its a long and tough negotiation and I know I'm hated for doing it but it works.

The damage to the bumper wouldn't put me off but make sure everything underneath is ok (it should be) as modern bumpers are very flexible and can hide damage underneath.

I'd use it as a way to bargain them down in price but to be honest unless it looks desperate I wouldn't repair it if you are going to be parking in any shopping center car park.
