Erratic mouse cursor on laptop

Hi all, my mum has a laptop and because she's not too keen on using the touchpad she has a USB mouse plugged in the back. But she is on her 2nd or 3rd mouse and the movement on all of them is really erratic. It tracks diagonally accross the screen then sticks in the top right hand corner and flashes for anything from 5 to 15 minutes, during which time, it is completely unusable.
She brought it to someone who said the port was faulty and she would need a new laptop!!!!
Today, I tried to upgrade the drivers, but they are all in order, and 'the device is working correctly'. I tried to unplug it then plug it in again, and didn't get any 'new hardware found' message. The cursor has now vanished. The touchpad worked for a while but that too is gone now.
She has a Dell laptop, about 8 to 10 years old, is running WinXP, but that is all I know. Sorry, but by the time I wanted to find out this, the mouse and touchpad had died.
I plan to connect a USB hub during the week and plug both the mouse and Internet thingy into it and see if the mouse works then. She has only 2 USB ports and the Internet dongle takes up one.
Apart from all that, her computer is REALLY slow, everything takes forever to open and run, although she had it serviced last year.
Appreciate any ideas or suggestions please :)

I have had the same problem, on and off, for some time now. I have noticed a couple of things..... It ONLY happens when the laptop (Toshiba) is plugged in. Also, it only happens when the laptop is NOT ON MY LAP. ie , if i am using it at a table and plugged in the cursor goes crazy! However, if am using it at a table and I "ground" it by gripping the underside of it, the cursor settles down. When I use it on my lap and plugged in ....no problem! Weird! Anyone know of a more permanent and reliable fix for this?
