Covering dark emulsion paint

    I am going to repaint a room that was painted with dark coloured emulsion (teen bedroom!). Would I be better to put several coats of the new colour - which will be a light colour - or could I cover it with white and just put one coat of colour?

    Thanks for any advice.

    It can be very hard to cover a dark colour, I have in the past by using the 10litre trade matt emulsion from Dulux, I use it for ceilings too, the coverage is great and its cheaper than the ceiling paint or smaller cans of white.
    Give the wall a good wash down with sugar soap and hot water, then couple of coats of the white, that should cover it(if there's still a hint of the dark colour add another coat), then use the colour over it.

    Thanks for that. In the end I got a painter to do it. He put on a white undercoat, the colour still showed through a bit, but he put two coats of the colour on it and its perfect.
