Since I have never had a classic car I never bothered polishing, so I know next-to-nothing about it. Having done some research it seems like a market with a fair amount of snake oil salesmen.

for example, I saw a 'car wax' selling for €5000 a can. I saw a reccommendation for zymol, who have a rather ridiculously complicated form to design your own personalised wax (questions such as 'Is the water to wash your car purified ?' whooahh)

anyway, all I want is not to damage anything and also give my slightly faded riviera blue bmw a decent shine for Terenure. any suggestions?

For durability, supposedly Collinite 476s is tops - google it...
suppose it's more a wax than a shiny polish as such - suppose it depends what you're after...

I use Zymol myself, the auto wash shampoo and the cleaner wax.
They are probably a bit more expensive than Autoglym and they are very good.
I ffound Autoglym to be a bit chalky.

Would highly recommend Zymol also. Kinda came across it by accident, my brother had some lying around in the garage. I thought it was cheap stuff actually due to the drab packaging but boy is it good. I had used Simonize and some other things before the Zymol but I may as well have been using nothing by comparision. It's not too expensive either compared to some others on the market.

Snap Seal gets my vote. You can polish your car in 20 minutes and the results are excellent.
If you have a bit more time try Meguiars.Another excellent polish.

If you want a lasting shine you first need to use a clay bar to get rid of tiny blemishes that you can feel when you rub your hand over the paint. I use auto glym high definition wax, it's a bit pricey but fantastic results

Another one that uses Snap Seal, here. Don't know whether it's good or bad, but by gum it's easy, and car looks well - which is a major ++ in my book. I really couldn't be arsed with the whole Karate Kid routine........:p

Tried "Mer" recently and liked it. Got a loan of it from a friend who swears by it (he's got one of the lovely last-of-the-made-in-Mexico Beetles.)

I use the same myself, much better than turtle wax (i think anything is better than that). I have noticed lately that it is leaving slight streaks, probably only the kind that I would notice.

I got a heap of Turtle Wax from a friend recently. I find it leaves streaks though. I'm working my way through it. It is much harder to apply than Auto Glym. At least its a healthy "work out" when doing the polishing thing.

This is a good thread, I might be tempted to buy some of the more expensive polishes thanks to all of the replies here.

I tend not to use a lot of polish as I only polish a car about twice a year. I do go through wax though. One I can recommend as easy to use and long lasting is the AutoGlym HD wax. It is so easy to apply in this warm weather if is great. It is not the cheapest but I do think it is worth the money.

If your car is already clean and polished, then you just want to nip in the garage of an evening and give a quck dust and buff I use Demon Shine "Spray on shine".. works really well. You can even wash a car with it and large microfibre cloth - assuming no bird crap or grit!

Dri wash n guard from the states (leaves no chalk) & auto glym high def wax twice = brilliant:D takes a while though & weary arms lol!
tried others but this is the best combo i reckon anyway.
