need to buy a PC online..not from Dell

    Apart from Dell where can I buy a Desktop PC online with the following


    1. Windows 7 professional
    2. Office 2010 Home and Business (the cheapest one with outlook)
    3. Include a 20" Monitor

    Finding it hard to get this for less than Dells €800 including vat delivered.

    I understand there are alternatives to the above software.. its not an option.

    I'm not sure as they don't list the operating system with the PC Specs....And it'd be pretty pricey to get Win 7 separate.

    EDIT: No, wait they do. In PC Systems, there's an option down the bottom for upgrades. Although I'm not too sure why they only have the 64 bit listed. I'm sure you can give them a buzz/email and they'll have the 32.

    Why not Dell?

    It's like saying I want to buy a good reliable car at a reasonable price, but not a Toyota, Nissan, Ford or VW

    Dont get me wrong, I have no connection with Dell other than as a customer


    Presumably, you know what you are talking about, why then ask the question when you know it all?

    I've researched the Dell options .. looking for a price comparison.

    I never used them myself, but I remember reading some tech blog on the BBC website where the journo was using a computer he got from these lads. He hadn't any issues with them by the way, he was talking about Windows 7.

    Dell are dodgy lately you'll get a much better deal and hardware elsewhere.

    Hardware failure rates for higher spec computers are very low for Dell, HP, Acer etc, this is because they are all built of mostly the same tried and tested components, businesses will tell you that most of their IT problems fall in the software or OS category

    Budget computers like the Dell vostro and the Compaq Presario ranges are built of cheap components for a particular market and their failure rates are quite high, most of the re-badged grey boxes also, avoid these if you dont want to spend telephone time talking to support at Bungalore

    Rubbish.

    Most of their Vostros are sold with Foxconn motherboards which aren't exactly what you would call bleeding edge but they aren't some unknown asian company either. In any case, I've had many Dell laptops and one dell desktop and they all have been perfect. My only ever issue was with the laptop's charger.

    For 15 to 5 years ago, when people ask me which computers company I would recommend. I used to say Dell as I would rarely hear of any problems. In the Last 5 years I began hearing some horror stories of way too many failing computers.

    At work we used Dell computers and laptops. The number of times Dell repair contractors, I see coming in is scary within the last 4 years in comparison to the previous 15 years and many people are having different problems and those are within warranty. Then you have the out of warranty computers failing, I seen mainly hard drives and laptop battery failures, along with motherboard failures that are causing computers freezing lock-ups. Problems I had with my work laptop (currently out of warranty) was lock-up due to RAM not seated correctly and Battery replacement.

    Four years ago I brought a personal laptop from Dell (M1510), as soon the warranty was up the mother power charging circuitry blew. Previous Workhorse Laptops, I never had any problems, other than software issues (not Dell related).
    With the M1510, I replace the motherboard with another motherboard and within 6 months the same thing happened. I did some research and discovered that many other users were facing the same problems and it was the design of the power charging circuitry that was the issue. I ended up buying a new computer again M1530 under their cancel order section and transferring my stuff to that computer which took a lot of time, and got annoyed that within 6 Months the same thing happened, It was the same cause, the power charging circuitry on the motherboard. Lucky for me it was still under warranty. Dealing with the customer support was difficult as I was been passed from one person to another, constantly explaining the same thing over and over and over again, initially they were blaming the software, etc, until I said I will take them to court for faulty service and product as I recorded each conversation on my phone and kept emails. I am not a heavy user on power on the laptop and about 5% of the time does it get extensive work. Rest of the time it emails, office, web browsing, the odd movie and basic applications that run on all computers.

    They eventually replaced the motherboard and power supply adaptor. Within a week the replacement motherboard circuit charging failed. They replace it again but within 1 month the replacement power adaptor failed. I suspect that the power adaptor would failed due to the flicking light on it and it was slow to power up from day 1. All these failures failed with only basic web browsing and email usage.

    I always expect failures from all computers but I do expect once fixed that it should last 5+ years.
    So far both are still working but as soon as it does I be off looking at another computer vendor (saving for it), especially when I read this stuff from the US courts.

    When companies compromise reliability for profits then I never buy from them again as they are no longer consumer oriented. Bad decisions due to greed causes companies to fail.

    Waa Waa Waa. Dell are bad, everybody else is good. Christ where did this hatred come from.

    Yeah there are manufacturing defects. FOR EVERY PC AND LAPTOP. Every model has its quirks and there are none that are unbreakable. That includes MAC's for all the fanboys out there.

    The reason for all these Dell horror story's is they dominated the home market here, so if 70% of the people you know have Dell's its a good assumption that 70% of the horror story's are going to be Dell related.

    So lets look at some facts. We have failure rates of about 3% on our Dell desktops over a three year period, about 5% on our hp desktops but they have a issue with power supply's on a older model.

    I think that's the problem there. The M1510 was a lovely machine but a complete disaster! I'd say there aren't too many of them that haven't given trouble at some stage.

    In my experience, any of the small girly laptops from Dell are much more likely to give trouble than the standard size ones. All of the Dell desktops are fine but from a business point of view, I'd feel safer with an Optiplex than a Vostro. Of course if it was my own money I was spending, I'd get a Vostro.

    I too am looking for an alternative.
    I tried to order from Dell (recent offer on XPS 8100) but they would not honour the price on the original order - Dell staff are trained to lie to their customers and kept sending me from billy to jack until the offer expired and I couldn't get the original price.

    Write out a email. Keep it clear and to the point. Don't demand or use a aggressive tone. Send it to Michael_dell@dell.com. You might not get a response but whoever thought up that scheme will more then likely get fired.

    Recently purchased a few new HP 500B MT off ebay for £270. Win7 pro / XP downgrade. Has Office 2007 installed and you can buy a key for it for less than €200. Got 19" Samsung monitor with it for extra £70.
    What you quoted is not bad if it includes MS office.
