That Windows box looks very similar to Apple's offering. It's fugly. Microsoft should focus more on their own products than just blatantly ripping Apple products. plagiarism alert !!!

Nothing new Windows always copys apple's features. I say stop appologising for who did what first and just go out and take the best features of any os's around

Lets be honest, there was nothing hugely necessary that wasnt available in Windows 2000 SP4... How Microsoft have managed to sell XP, Vista , 7 and now this is beyond me.

I'll probably move to Linux rather than have to pay Microsoft for the effectively the same operating system again.

I suggest Ubuntu. Great Linux distro for new people. Unless you are a heavy gamer, or need special applications(CAD and the like) you have plenty to gain by using Linux. I have been windowless for 5 years and couldn't be happier.

You should be in control of your computer, not the other way around.

So you feel plagiarism is ok? It's pretty immoral at best. Innovation has never been a priority for Microsoft mind you.

Lots of ubuntu users upset that the minimise / maximise buttons are now on the top left of the window like on a MAC

And if you ask any Atari or Amiga user they will both tell you that Apple stole windows from them, or was it GEM they stole from. Xerox on the other hand will point out they had all this stuff in the '70's windows, laser printers, mice and all, at which point the Canadian Navy will go "mice  , we were using trackballs in the '50's "

Anyway it's the 100th anniversary of Konrad Zuse who invented world's first functional program-controlled Turing-complete computer, the first high level language. The concept of The Matrix and loads of other stuff. Even if the UK / US had done nothing in computers (and I'm including Babbage too) we'd still have them now.

Point is that a lot of the basics in computers are waiting to be discovered and even if key players are missing it will happen anyway.

Have they given up on WinFS ?
the SQL type filesystem that's been waiting in the wings for bloody ages.

how are they going to make sure the windows appstore don't have trojans as the bad publicity would be unreal ?

The last time I heard about it was a magazine back in the early 00's. Somehow I doubt a relational database is a good idea for a filesystem. Do you really need such an abstraction for your filesystem?. Horrible idea.

Better handling of wireless networking, built-in firewall, native support for SSDs, native (albeit limited) disc authoring, USB2/eSATA support, DirectX10, native support for touch input via the Ink API, better power management...and I'm sure there are plenty more.

They may not be things you particularly need or use, but there's no denying that Windows has moved on since Win2K in a variety of ways. Whether it's worth paying for instead of going for a free-to-download Linux distro is for the end user to decide based on their own requirements. I'm curious as to whether a Linux distro can offer the same experience as either iOS on the iPad or Win8 on the tablets they anticipate to be the Next Big Things....I'm inclined to think not, or at least not to begin with...

Id agree to a point for consumer stuff, but for enterprise stuff you got alot of new features around better Group Policy, WMI is much improved in later versions of Windows; The underlaying processing technologys for AD and Group policy are to a point more fault tollorant and more customisable.

Windows Vista was a dream to deploy, no more Image for every type of hardware / vendor; Or painfully scripting around WinPE to do on the fly DLL replacements etc...

Windows 7 had your package and Driver injection technologies (which existed somewhat in vista); DISM is a lifesaver at the moment for me.

Also 64bit Windows OS's are becomming more popular in both Enterprise + Consumer, its great to see the transition and how accepted the architecture is; Anyone who worked in Windows XP 64bit would know about patchy driver support and software support.

    @Capt'

I havent seen anything on WinFS for ages, i would doubt that it will make an appearance; Stuff that may appear is the compatability for 128bit architecture (It was certainly boasted for Windows 8 Server).

Its more evident looking at the Microsoft portfolio that stuff is going more cloud based, you may see simular services appear up like the Microsoft MyPhone stuff; You may see more Social network integration, WinMo seems to be going this direction, a device with seemingless integration to various "streams".

When is Plagarism Plagarism though. When Netflix decides it wants to compete with hulu? When Pat the butcher copies Tom the butcher by offering gourmet sausages? When netscape decides it wants to launch a competing software program against Internet Explorer?

Its a matter or Patent and Copyright infringement. And believe me, Apple and Microsoft have entire offices full of blood sucking lawyers who have nothing better to do than snort coke **** hookers and find ways to sue their competitors.

    :pac:

What has apple brought to the table ? The functionality in the iPhone/iPad has been around for years, both devices dont run latest gen technology (4g for example).

Apple has done pretty poorly in enterprise integration, its done great on creating a solid brand image based on exclusive hardware.

I agree. Now name ONE product that Microsoft has developed that could be considered "innovative". Innovation gets thrown around far too often. It can be claimed that most modern computer
breakthroughs(GUI, Ethernet) from Xerox and the like were invented long before Apple raged about it's gui being brought to the masses. Windows 95 wasn't all that innovative either. Infact, most
companies I think about don't exist to fundamentally further human progress. Company profit and shareholders are the only important points to consider. Nothing wrong with this, but you can't
complain about Apple, when Microsoft hasn't really put too much thinking forward either.

Getting a bit pedantic, arent we? But I agree, windows upgrades have been iterative; not innovative.

But in fairness to microsoft and apple, i think bill gates a few years ago predicted the tablets popularity at the same point in time steve jobs thought otherwise:

    http://gizmodo.com/5541969/bill-gates-told-steve-jobs-about-the-ipad-in-2007

and back in the 90s, nailed the smartphone prediction

    http://gizmodo.com/5545418/bill-gates-almost-a-tech-nostradamus

Its innovation; but not at the pace you seem to expect. Its still involving computing. Most of this stuff is bogged down by moores law.

LOL , it was classic vapourware

not all goals are realised and sometimes you are better off not waiting for a feature unless you have concrete evidence that it's got at least as far as alpha and the vendor is committed to it
