Help me choose which racing game to get please.
Last one I bought and loved was Pacific Rift but it's probably over a year since that was played. Now that it looks like maybe, possibly, conceivably, GT5 might be out this year, a little bit, I've a mind to get something in the meantime to get me back into the genre.

The two conteneders would appear to be:

    Split/Second.
Got the demo off PSN and it's good fun. Looks very slick. Maybe most importantly, my 6 year old liked it so there's the prospect of 2 player fun (Or an early night for him if he gets too good) instead of getting my arse handed to me online.

    Blur.
Know nothing about it bar what the trailer shows me. Plus side: appears to have real cars. Minus: Many reviews have put it second to split/second.

I can wait for GT5 for simulation kicks so for now I want arcadey action. Will be playing with joypads, not wheels and pedals. Am I forgetting any other contenders? Outrun on PSN could be an outside bet?

    All opinions welcome, ta.

I have them both, and I play Blur far more. Blur is one of the most fun games I've played online.

Split second is good, tho once someone gets a decent lead it's very difficult for them to lose, due to the way the power ups work..

    My personal preference is Blur

I also have both and my favourite of the two is Blur. It is just a really, really fun game both online and in single player mode.

Split Second is a good game too but I prefer the car combat in Blur to the way power-ups work in Split Second. If you are after a racer more than a car combat game though I would probably suggest Split Second. The actual racing is probably slightly better but I think there is more fun in Blur.

Forget both of them and get Burnout Paradise instead :D

That would be my suggestion too if the OP doesn't already have it.

Also, Blur is a more mature kart racer. You may also find ModNation Racers good.

Wipeout HD is the only correct answer.

I'm surprised that no-one mentions the fact that S/s physics on the cars seem a bit odd. Blur cars slide nicely and you get the idea that the car actually has a suspension. With the s/s demo, I thought I was pushing a shoebox around the track.

Blur's online progression is great. I don't even try to win. Just try to get a lot of fans to unlock new cars and try and make my current cars better. Great fun, lots of tracks.

My 6yo son and wife love Burnout Paradise but I don't.

There are two types of racing games. Depends of that, what You like:

If you like just... arcade games with cars on the subject think about:

Burnout Paradise - fun, even more fun playing online
NFS Undercover - one of the worst NFS I have ever played :D
    Blur
    Split Second

If you have a lot of fun driving your car... not in traffic jam :p - buy:

    - NFS Shift - awesome!
    - GRID - very good
    - GT5 - 2nd November probably... who knows... revolution or a mistake?
    - NFS ProStreet but... it's not the perfect. I liked this game because someone smart put to this game Mondello Park :D

Dirt 2 is excellent... if you can find it. It's taken me 3/4 months to find it, and got it for 29.99 in Smyths.

Excellent variations of racing, you have standard rally races, trailblazer which is similar to rally, theres rally cross which is track racing and there's racing desert buggies and jeeps too

    Heres IGN's review

Well I went for Split Second (despite yizzer advice :P) and I've no regrets.
For someone who isn't into racing games as a genre, it's good fun to dip in and out of. I'd rarely spend more than two hours playing any game of an evening so longevity isn't really an issue. That said, after flying through the first couple of races and challenges I've started coming across some where it might take the hour or two to shave off the last two seconds, or dodge the last missile, so it's enough of a challenge for me.

Probably for a less casual gamer it would be one to rent. I would certainly be better off renting some games than my usual MO of buy it, play it twice, regret it, trade it in, repeat. Trouble I have is, I could rent a game and not get near the PS3 for a week, and it could end up as expensive and unfulfilling as my current regime.

Definitely Blur. S/S just doesn't stand up to it.
