Doing the exact same thing myself, going in August though, I asked the question a while back and everyone said around the Randwick area was quite good and descent prices for rent. The Gumtree Sydney website is quite good to have a look at what you can get, your talkin around $500 per week for a standard 2 bedder though so it's not cheap!

Yep Randwick, Coogee and Bondi are all recommended - Randwick in particular.

There was a thread on the forum here: http://forum.paddysaway.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2&sid=546f00819fd4b21107ad509a0fb76f63

depending how long you plan living in sydney , look into renting an unfurnished apt and furnish it yourself as it would be cheaper in the long run, you can pick up some real quality 2nd hand stuff off gumtree , and for say your bed and stuff , you could buy that new..... well buy 2nd hand also if ya want but bed wise, i personally would buy a new one .
