My email and facebook account has been hacked over the past 3 weeks.
I have received mad emails accousing me of sleeping with someone husband(!!), which is crazy. I havent slept with anyone at all! I have no idea who it may be. Does anyone know how I can trace the hacker? I have an email address from where the mail came from.

They have changed all my security information on hotmail, so I cannot access my own email any longer either, this give the hacker the oppertunity to email others as me. I cannot even close my email account.

I have been to the local guards, they cannot do anything, as I havent been threatened, only insulted. Which apperantly isnt a crime!

Anyone any clue what to do or how to find out who this might be??????

first things first is get your computer scanned with anti-virus (try avast, it's free) and anti-spyware (try spyboy search&destroy, it's free too).

have you logged in from anywhere except home recently? have you shared your login details with anyone? have you shared your login details with any websites?

change your passwords and security questions on any other online accounts you use.

read what facebook + hotmail have to say too:

Happily we live in a free enough society where to insult is not a criminal offence, sure the entire Irish population would be locked up if it were. However, I think there would be a case made for trespass to chattels - essentially trespassing your personal property by entering your email account without permission.

There's not a lot the Gardai can do, to the best of my knowledge the only computer crime unit that exists is for extremely serious crimes.

First things first, change your password to everything you can remember that is related to that email address immediately. Then I would focus on getting control back of the email account. Contact the email provider and tell them, in as nice a way as possible, that they have given access to an unauthorized third party and you wish to have them return control back to the owner - I'm sure they'll require that you provide some sort of proof of who you are, more than likely photo ID or something significant enough to be believable. Get a police/garda incident report number too, that always helps in these cases (some email providers wont do anything without one).

Unless the emails are demanding money for some service, it would seem to me to be the actions of a person trying to push your buttons.

I wouldn't be so quick to say spyware/malware or trojans were at play either, much more likely that your password or secret passphrase was something simple enough that someone persistent enough can guess. It happens all the time.

I have a similar problem . My Hotmail account has been hacked and my password changed so i cant access it . I have had the account for about 12 years and never had a problem before .I have followed the links in Windows live to try and get my account back but am still waiting on a response . The link they offer to a private forum has only worked once (about an hour ago ) due to technical difficulties experienced by Hotmail apparently .I then found out that my e-bay account password has also been changed .What concerns me most is that I use PayPal when buying on eBay .If my ebay account is compromised does that mean my PayPal details are also although i use a seperate password ?? Should I cancel my credit card to be on the safe side ??
