    Hi there

I'm wondering about the garageband application that comes on a macbook. Is it as good as the guy at Harvey Norman said it is?

I am thinking of buying a macbook but I will need it to update my website etc also. Is it easy to use for all day to day stuff that up to now I have been doing on my PC

    All advice welcome

Garageband is pretty good for doing demo's or stuff for myspace, and for creating loops and recording music. It is by far the best free music app. They do EVERYTHING better than PC"S IMHO I wouldn't buy in Harvey Norman though!

Not sure what you intend to use Garageband for but I'm not at all musical or have a clue about putting music stuff together. I recently downloaded a schedule for the couch-to-5K program which had the verbal cues but no music. I found it very easy to put in the music I wanted and add extra bits of voice over with Garageband, I think I put the first one together in about 2 hours.

As for everything else Mac is just so much more intuitive than Microsoft, I've made DVDs from iPhoto with music and captions, edited together a family video using iMovies and iDVD. If you wanted to do this with a PC it would be slow and arduous - I have tried. My 9 year old nephew makes stop-motion Lego movies with Photo Booth. I've had my MacBook for about 4 years now, it still boots up quickly, unlike my laptop and PC which need a rebuild once I can back up the data; the laptop had a new hard drive about 4.5 years ago and the PC had a major rebuild at the same time. I updated the OS and iWorks and iLife on Saturday - no problems and TimeMachine backed up my hard drive to a USB connected WD hard drive with out any hassle.

The only problems that I have have been with my Sony Camcorder, which was not recognised but this has been corrected with the recent up grade. The MS Office for Mac I have (2006 version I think) doesn't always produce Word documents that can be read on standard Office, the new iWorks should be able to do this but I have yet to test it. And an odd one, you can't use Safari to pay you M50 toll.

I like my MacBook so much I'm probably going to replace my PC with an iMac when I have the money and just have a Microsoft based laptop (if anything at all).

I've done band demos using Garageband on a G4 PowerBook and no problems. Very user friendly. Dual layered lead guitars, bass, 2x drum tracks and multiple vocals. Great for editing afterwards and conversion to MP3 or AIFF is simples!
