www.qualifax.ie is usually pretty clear to explain the groupings in arts degrees.

Do you want to do english and history in an arts degree first and then the PGDE in secondary teaching?

    or

Would you prefer to do a B.Ed. in secondary teaching (english and history)?

    Either tbh
I will look into them both it's just I am searching all day and my head is wrecked. Every site I go on to doesn't even give me any college names they give me useless info

Well for ucd as I understand it, you can do 4 subjects in an arts degree in first year. First year totals to 60 credits. So you could do 20 credits history, 20 credits english, 10 + 10 of 2 others.

I think NUI Maynooth does 3 subjects in first year.

In all arts degrees you can then specialise i.e english and history for you.

Most of the modules you see listed are worth 5 credits

    Thanks man
I am on the arts section now in ucd and it is currently down for maintenance
This pisses me off, a lot of the college websites are like this
Carlow college was like this for f*cking months and it still says it is under construction

If you wanna do history and english arts in ucd its important that after DN012 you put down the code for english and history so that you are guaranteed enough credits to carry english and history through to second year.

The code is in the table above but good luck in working it out. It seems to be ENH but it could have been explained a bit better.

You can just put DN012 on your CAO but english and history are really popular so there's no guarantee you would get enough credits in them come september

The most common route taken by secondary teachers of English and History would be a three-year arts degree followed by a one-year diploma in education.

The way a BA usually works is that you choose several subjects in first year (3 or 4), and then specialize in two subjects for second year and final year (in your case English and History). In your final year, 50% of your degree will be in English and 50% in History which satisfies the Teaching Council's eligibility requirements.

For your CAO application to UCD, the course code you would need to put down is DN012/ENH. Once you get accepted to the degree, it's just a case of putting in enough work every year til you finish with what you wanted.

Most of the information you need is available on this link: https://myucd.ucd.ie/programme_info/firstyearexplained.ezc

Hi Cleirigh, I went to St. Patrick's College of Education and did the Arts degree. I know for a fact that they DO allow the combination of English literature and History together.

In the arts programme you choose three subjects to study in first year and drop one of these subjects in second year. You are awarded your degree in the two subjects that you studied for the three years

Consider it! Check your sources of information

After this three year course you can do a one year post graduate degree in education in maynooth, trinity, ucd and cork university college
