I'd appreciate if anyone could tell me what it says?

On that note, is there any technology that allows one to "draw" Chinese characters and translates them into English? I'm pretty much tone deaf, so learning to understand and speak Chinese isn't really on the cards, but I'm heading over this Autumn and would like to have some method of communication? In countries using the latin alphabet it's easy enough to pick up your iphone etc. and using a translator app. communicate, each person using their own language. Is there a "work around" or device for Chinese?

    Many thanks

Dunno what it says, but that photo's upside-down. A lot of electronic Chinese dictionaries let you draw symbols on a touch-pad and can give you a translation, but they can be expensive.

Niall, I have a partial answer for you:-
yes, it is chinese. it is a sword from the ancient time. At that time we did not have simple chinese, and this is a special writing. it is not simple chinese, and they are Traditional Chinese version.these five characters in chinese are龍=龙, the second i do not know, 寶=宝,劍=剑 and 虎。龙means dragon, 宝means precious, 剑 means sword, and 虎means tiger

Thanks so much Supercell, could the unknown symbol be pheonix / peng? The spirit of a jian is said to be either the spiritual dragon or pheonix?
The sword itself is a two handed wu jian, about 5.5 ft in length, perhaps this is what the tiger refers to? So I'm wondering, based on your translations if it could be :
dragon & pheonix, precious tiger sword? Or would the tiger symbol encircled suggest the maker? leaving ____ dragon precious sword?

Once again thanks for your help.

I've pasted the translation above if I've understood correctly? Re. the second symbol, the left hand of it seems to contain a stylised version of shui (water) from the Bagua?
