Mods, please move if wrong forum.

Hoping to move house soon. My partner is Swedish and we'd like to be able to watch SVT without having to fire up the laptop and hope for a decent connection speed! What kind of dish/decoder would we need in order to receive this (if it's available)

The two main Swedish tv packages are on 1w and 5e .
Canal Digital is on 1w and Viasat is on 5e.
SVT1,SVT2 and SVT24 are on the European beam of 1w so that is easily viewable in Ireland on an 80cm dish.
Viasat uses the Nordic beam so you would need a big dish to view it in Ireland ,probably a 1.5m at least.
There are quite alot of Swedish channels on 1w ,most of them are pay channels though and broadcast in Conax encryption.
    List of channels here
    http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/canaldigital.html
To view them you would need a receiver that supports Conax cards and obviously a Canal Digital viewing card which would have to be bought in Sweden.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks! So for the 3 SVT chanels only I would need an 80cm dish set at 1w. No need for the Conax card for them? What type of receiver would I need?

No ,you will need a conax card subscription to watch them, very little fta Swedish channels unfortunately.

Bummer! Ok, will check out the price of the cards in Sweden. They're very expensive from UK sellers- 1,000+ Roughly how much would a suitable receiver that supports these cards be or should I get that in Sweden too?

I'd imagine you would be as well off to take whatever box that comes with the sub back in Sweden. From what I remember, it is a very expensive package though..

From memory, there is a ftv SVT card for domestic SVT viewing that residents of Sweden can ask for. I have a friend who lives there who told me this.
You dont have to subscribe to canal digital or whatever its called.
Thing is, someone in Sweden will have to do the asking. Anyway it does exist.

Great! I'll get the mother-in-law to make enquiries! Thanks.

You can get SVT1, SVT2, SVT24/Barkanalen from 4.6e from a patched Technomate for free! You would need a slightly larger dish - 1m maybe?

You wouldnt definetly want about a 1metre dish for either 5east or 1degree west or it will break up in bad weather, I have a 1.2 metre myself.

Guessing you can't pick up the nordic beams with a 1.2m in limerick no? :(

The only way to get swedish channels is to have either Viasat or Canal Digital subscription which you can only sign up to in sweden. There is boxer aswell but that one is only working within sweden. You would need a at least a 1.2 M dish for that. I was thinking to get this once but gave it up since it is getting to expensive as only the equipment would cost over 400 eur with installation, on top of that you still need to pay the monthly subscription fee.

Viasat is using Astra4 and CAnal Digital is using the Thor satelites.

In Sweden you would get the dish for free from both Viasat and Canal Digital, but they are both too small to be used in Ireland.
In Sweden the Viasat dish is slightly smaller than Canal Digital

You will get a approved receiver from both Viasat and Canal Digital, they have special offers all the time, but you need to sign a 2 year contract.
