    Hi All,

Do most people source their front door from their window companies?

I am looking for something more modern than I have seen on brochures and my wife is keen on something like this:
    http://www.urbanfront.co.uk/contemporary-front-doors/1/designs/p1/manhattan/r13

We haven't started the build yet, but we are going timber frame and need to decide on sizes for doors and windows.
Are front doors a standard size?

    Thanks in advance.

In anticipation of some of the replies:

We might order from that site I posted but it is from the UK and is expensive.
I am wondering if there are Irish alternatives? Or at least a showroom somewhere to look at other options.

Please keep me posted if you get any information on this. The door on that link is gorgeos. we are looking to get a garage door and in time a new hall door to go with it and would like something contemporary also. Would love to know if there is an Irish firm doing this type of thing.

    Please post progress,
i have that door and site saved in my mood folder for about a year. Been quoted nearly 5 K for the door and cladding either side of it , gulp!

Yes, any good joiners will make a one off special for you. It's a matter of choosing and treating the woods properly. I have designed one-off sets before and got them made. Maintanance is an issue, but you get what you want.

As uncletom says, any good joiner will make it for you. I got mine from <SNIP>

But, this pic (sorry, camera phone pic...will try and get a better one), is gorgeous, and is closer to what I wanted on my own house. There again, I didn't pay 5k for mine

Another thing to consider - the glazing around the door is triple glazed - we had to put in steel to carry the weight, at door head height......triple glazing is very, very heavy !

    Hi there,

Doors like the one in the image cost .. plain and simple.

The only alternative that will bring the cost down is using an Insulated Panel door.

Most window manufacturers use these panels 24mm or 34mm as inserts inside a standard timberframe.

However it is possible to get doors made out of Panel only 78mm or 88mm deep. These panels have timber laminated on the outside (Pine, Larch, Oak, Teak, etc)

Doors made using this method are more expensive than normally price timber doors but cheaper than the type you shoudl in the photograph.

The other element that can really push the price of Front doors up is the locking system and furniture ... this can range from a few hundred to thousands !!

I recently saw an incredible front door, matt black, hidden hinges, thumb print access, etc, etc ... at the knock down price of €11,000 ... you get what you pay for !!

Did anyone have any luck sourcing a contemporary front door in Ireland? I love the one in the original post but am not having any luck finding something similar in Ireland.

Did anyone have any luck sourcing a contemporary front door in Ireland? I love the one in the original post but am not having any luck finding something similar in Ireland.

I visited the UrbanFront offices over a year and drooled over the doors (was living in the UK at the time).
Armed with a sketch of our ideal door, I visited other joiners in the UK and did the same when I moved back to Ireland. To cut the story short, for the urban front/contemporary style of door we're looking at approx 4k. This is with dbl glazed side lights and top light, iroko teak.

As an aside, I spoke with someone who has some experience working with wood (teak) and was asked if the doors quoted for have a steel frame to prevent warping. None do. Maybe a steel frame is necessary, maybe not.

I'm also considering an aluminium door. As UrbanFront has already been mentioned in earlier posts without censor I see no harm in mentioning the manufacturer here (mods, snip if necessary)...Hormann.
Got a quote for the same ope size..came in more expensive than joiner manufactured door but not by much. The thermal performance is supposedly a lot better with less maintenance.

Just to note, I've no connection whatsoever with any of the above door suppliers.

We too didn't want a standardish door, sorry about the bad pic, it's literally only being fitted at the moment, here is ours, trilled with it, not everyone's cup of proverbial tea, but we love it! Triple glazed door and side panel.

Lovely! Where did you get it and did you have to get a mortgage to pay for it?

Came through our window supplier, all from Germany. Wasn't that cheap but wasn't the prices talked about above at the 5k mark!

Solidor has contemporary doors, they look good quality too, not an expert though.

And while we're throwing more manufacturers names in the ring, I've just found Rodenberg online (German) and Internorm (Austrian), both with a large selection of contemporary doors ...not wood however.

    Again, no connection.
