MW2, worth a shot?

So I was a big COD2 fan back in the day, and managed to play on a few specific servers while using dialup. By the time MW1 came along I was heavily into Red Orchestra: Ostfront and MW felt a bit too arcady compared to RO where kills were very hard to obtain. I've spent most of the last year and more playing Company of Heroes but have found in the last couple of months i'm going back to MW1 and having a great time getting familiar with it again. I've stuck to a TDM server called [UN] match server and found it to have some good players online.

So this takes me to MW2. The game itself hadn't even registered with me until I stumbled across Tallon's first nuke thread a while back and I thought that this looks fun, and the more videos I watch the more interesting aspects and tweeks I like. The first problem I would have to overcome will be my PC specs, but that can be sorted if needs be with an upgrade here and there, but the second issue is the amount of threads here with the PC version being full of hax. Am I right in saying there is no punkbuster in MW2? And if so can you still find decent reliable servers to play or are they all compromised by dicks being dicks?

Well if you thought COD4 was "arcadey" and not of interest, I'd suggest MW2 is even more slanted in that direction. So maybe still not for you?

It can be a hugely fun game, or the most frustrating thing on the planet. It depends what kind of lobby you end up in. If you meet up with a gang of mates, it can be great fun, but equally a lobby of Randoms who aren't spamming the noob tube or running commando can be great fun too. Just luck of the draw I guess.

MW2 is very arcadey, theres not a shred of realism in most of it, you can add perks that make you invunerable from jumping off any height, or making you invisible to thermal scopes. like was already said it can be huge fun but hugely frustrating as well.

Well my arcady reference was more so for back in the day in comparison to RO, but here and now the unrealistic aspect is what i'm liking. With MW1 you can have it loaded up and in a game within a minute or two, so its all good in that sense.

The vid posted above gives a good look into the multiplayer aspect and its a shame that there is no dedicated servers, so it looks like a good game is in the lap of the gods as it could be with anyone, as opposed to the same bunch of players.

How about the cheating parts, do you see many players using hax?

It does happen occasionally, sometimes you could be very unlucky and get more than one game in a row with cheaters. I was chatting to a friend, there was a guy on the other team in a game he was playing had removed textures so he could see through walls. Luckily one of his friends was hosting, started streaming videos and broadcasting on xfire to make the guy lag like hell. But yeah, there is no punkbuster, so apart from something like that, there is nothing much can be done to stop cheaters.

Hi delly hows things? Long time no see.
I wouldnt recommend it to at all mate.
Its pure arcade totally dumbed down compared to the origional COD titles you may be used to on PC.
Having said that initially i had fun with it for a week or two before getting bored.
A few times since i tried to play it but within a few minutes i just realise for the 1,000th time its not for me BUT BUT BUT the odd time you will have a fun and enjoyable game, its just so hit and miss for me.
COD4 imo is a vastly superior game, theres tonnes of servers and communities for COD4.
Theres also plenty of COD and COD2 servers out there.
As has been said if you thought COD4 was arcadey you have seen nothing yet.

Hey Cully, i'm grand thanks for asking.
'tis good to get your input and do you know what, i might just fire up COD2 if there are still servers knocking about. I don't get too much time to play tbh, so its a case of getting the most out of it when you do.

Back in the day as well, i'd shell out cash on a game and if i didn't play it then whatever, but these days with delly jr. and a hefty mortgage 50 quid on a short lived game is not to be taking lightly. I'm starting to sound like a bloody aul lad!

The game may be worth a shot, but it's definitely not worth it for PC. You could probably easily pick up a very cheap copy for 360 or PS3 out there, but with almost no discounts for the PC version (and Steam still charging the full €60), I'd avoid it.

IMO, COD4 was better. It was simpler in many ways but I feel they had the balance between 'arcadey' and 'realistic' just right. MW2 on the otherhand goes way out there in terms of arcade-style gaming, however, it can be great fun too.

It really depends on what you want. If you want something to while away a couple of hours here and there withough worrying too much about realism then it's a great game and can be really good fun.

As someone who also has a hefty mortgage and a r3nu4l-ette (female mini-me :D) I don't get much gaming time at all so don't take it seriously, therefore MW2 is heaps of fun for me :)

Horses for courses prob is the best way to descibe it. For just fun piss taking gameage with some friends then its spot on. If you take gaming way too seriously and are worried about your ping and lag then dont touch it.

    CTF is great fun though!

Thanks for all the comments folks. I think if I was a little more flush i'd give it a shot, but €60 is a too much at the moment.
