Need help and I'm confused with an Alesis

I got a voucher for christmas , it burnt a hole in my pocket for a week , and went out and bought one of these lads.

I play a few bit and bobs and I have in my head that I have a lot of songs that I would like to record.
I did do research to a degree before I bought this but due to the fact I have very little knowledge of music production and recording I'm confused about something and maybe someone can put me straight..

When I was younger I remember watching a friend record on a Tascam 8 Track. The room was quite "smokey" at the time so my memory is a little fuzzy. I remember him laying down a guitar track and then coming along a working out a bass line over it with the ability to rewind and practice it before finally recording the one he was happy with.

My question is , is this something that my unit should be able to do, without connecting to a computer? I have an Ipod but I'm not sure what generation it is. Please forgive if it is a absolutely stupid question, but if it is can you let me know, i.e Tell me I'm thick... and I'll try research some more. I do have an old tape deck from a seperates system, is this something I can add to the equation.

Here's a link to the product, Cheers

you should absolutely, 200% (not a typo) be able to do this with a multi-track recorder.

I can record something from one of the channels onto the Ipod no problem, I just cant figure out how to play over/record a new channel. Shows up in Itunes, Yeah I guess in a way you are using it as a HD

well then just select another channel to record and play back initial recording at same time and voila, you're multi-tracking.

Cheers Damaged, I thought it would be that simple but I'm not so sure. I dont think the ipod is the job for this after all, or maybe I just cant figure it out because I don't know the terminologies for recording

it probably is capable of a few tracks, i couldnt imagine the ipod being fast enough to carry more tvan 4/5 at once.

anyway, i havent a clue, never seen it before so i'd suggest getting stuck into your manual.

Purely a guess but I imagine the IPod records the master stereo output.
