My friends have just moved into a new flat and all they can get is RTE 1 and 2 and the reception is very poor. They asked me to find out a bit about getting a box and a dish cause I am the resident techie. However this one is a bit out of my wheel house.

They only want something that will get the the irish channels and some of UK ones, c4, the beebs and such. They have an old TV so HD isn't really a concern , they are a bit broke paying for the new place though so nothing too expensive. Any ideas?

A Freesat branded box and 60cm dish would be your best option for English channels, For Irish tv they will need an Aerial and some time in the future they will need a new Mpeg4 TV or a Mpeg4 Terrestrial receiver.
see supplier sticky. One of our regular posters Steveon is in the trade in Limerick send him a PM if you need it done Professionally
Stay away from cheap Lidl/Aldi kits they are poorly made.

I'm in a similar situation and am looking a two different Freesat boxes.

This one from freesat.ie (DIY version, €99 satellite receiver and dish)

    http://www.freesat.ie/index.php?cat=Freesat_DIY_Systems

or this one from Power City (DIY, €80.95 receiver and dish)

    Any opinions would be appreciated.....

I have a HD ready TV.

    Orange pilled.

I bought the powercity philex kit, and despite a set-up issue (see my earlier thread), some of which may have been my own fault, I think it was good value. Points of note:- the dish is sturdy, and in particular the bracket is solidly supported.- you will need a southerly or east facing wall, as the length of the bracket won't quite allow the dish to rotate perpendicular to the wall- 10m of sat cable is provided - if you need longer you would be better off buying the full new length, than messing around joining cable- you should budget for a separate quality scart lead (!)- watch out for the fact that the sound control may be manipulated by your tv remote, so you may end up amplifying at the tv a small output from the sat box (!) But overall quite happy. See other threads for discussion of Free to Air versus Freesat branded. Have fun.
