Setting up file server in house and worried about local security

    Hi,
I'm just going to run a laptop with linux and some NAS software for sharing off my USB connected HD over the net. Laptop will also be used for backing up data to another external drive.

The thing I'm concerned about is somebody taking the usb drive out and plugging it into their own machine. I live with a few lads and sometimes there could be a party in the house when I'm not here.

Does anyone know any solution for this without slowing the data access to a crawl having to decrypt data everytime I access? I suppose come to think of it though I would be happy with encrypting a small amount of the data if that's what's required. Most of the other stuff is fairly ok in that I wouldn't mind someone seeing it.

Anybody know software that can handle all this?

Cloud all the way. I'm sure you're paying just as much on electricity to keep that setup online.

You could put the porn sensitive data in a truecrypt partition / container and just mount it wherever you want. You could also use EncFS.

I don't think it would be too slow. Truecrypt decrypts on the fly I'm fairly sure, it seems fairly fast, but I've never watched a video from an encrypted partition. Not sure how EncFS does it.

But either way if someone rips out your harddrive, the data will still be encrypted. Both are really easy to use.

I think your upload speed will be the limiting factor rather than the decryption if
    your doing it from home.

    Only joking about the porn.

Thanks for the info here. Gonna check that truecrypt out.

Server is up and running now so only getting back to this now.

Gotta get some mysql login errors sorted out now before I to anything else.

Oh and I did look at Rackspaces cloud service alright. Seems to be no real security...maybe encrypted files would do the trick though come to think of it. I've a laptop running as a server here now so I'm enjoying the novelty of it and the setting up of stuff.
