I was thinking of going to see Keith Barry (The Asylum Show). Whats people opinion on this? Do you thing it will be as funny as it sounds? Its in the Olympia - where would be a good area to be seated here. I hate going to any kind of show and be seated a million miles away. Need to be part of the action - well not literally in this case.

He's done most of it live on tv before, and hes so short of material, he repeats it on different shows only a few weeks apart.

    it was quite good

If you are seated in the upper circle in the Olympia you may as well be at home the view is terrible, However the view from ground floor seating the the majority of first floor seating is pretty good.

As for the show itself I havent seen it, from what I have seen of Keith Barry he seems entertaining enough just dont take it too seriouly as psychic powers do not exist which IMO makes the likes of him and derron brown far more interesting to put that much work into deception rather than be born with a "gift"

i went and really enjoyed it

    didnt volunteer for anything though!

Heard him doing "magic" on the radio a fair bit recently - absolute tripe IMO.

In fairness to him radio isnt a great mediumfor magic, unless you want to make the audience disapear

Keith Barry, what a complete and utter idiot.

Said he was going to "shut down the country" etc. I notice he hasn't mentioned that in any of his tv appearances since.

I went to see keith barry last night and thought it was fantastic, seated on the ground floor 5 rows from the front so great view, went up on stage to help out in one part of an act, genuinely funny show, second half of the show for me was the best as he hypnotised around 16 people on stage and made them do hilarious stuff especially funny was the couple who thought they were from mars and spoke to each other in mars launguage ..imo go along and enjoy and have a laugh least we can do these days:)

neither him or Derron Brown claim to have psychic powers, in fact they both hate "psychics".

You see, this is the part that I don't believe. I have been hypnotised on many occasions and you are always aware of your surroundings and still have your full faculties. I can't understand how he can get them doing this kind of stuff therefore. So I would be sceptical.

I'm going to his show this week. Would ye guys recommend that I volunteer for anything or am I going to make a tit out of myself if I do?

Saw the show last night. First half was brilliant - second half was absolute hack garbage. Go and see the show for the genius of the first half, but do yourself a favour and leave at the interval.

Second half will just be a bunch of idiot attention seekers who will make some lame attempts at being funny and then come off stage thinking they were brilliant.

I'm sure what he said at that time was fairly emotionally charged.. his grandad was dying in hospital at the time.. he did actually put a lot of pressure on the government after the incident.

Funny thing about this thread...all those that went to see the show are positve and glowing about Keith and his show. The keyboard warriors who didn't go but just like sitting on their fat asses begrudging and abusing everything are doing what they do best.

I've never seen Keith Barry, but himself, Derren Brown and David Blaine would not have an act i would have a big interest in. But having said that, everyone i have spoken with that went to the show said they had a great time.

If i was offered the chance to go i'd take it. Don't let your suppositions stop you from finding something new you might enjoy.

My post was hardly glowing. Thanks to the 2nd half of the show I've lost a lot of the respect I had for Keith as a performer - it was cringe worthy Butlins entertainment at best.

    its crap.

He'd have to hypnotise me into not thinking he's a complete and utter twat before I'd go.

It's not too bad a view. You should be able to see the stage but maybe not every act if he's very near the front of the stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 736 ✭✭✭Dilynnio

Apparently he is setting a €50K psychic challenge to one person as in yes you can apply for it...more info in the independent tomorrow......saw it advertised somewhere...interesting me thinks!:D

His show is excellent. He puts in a good performance but do not go up as a volunteer.
Jesus the things he makes them do is cruel but it is entertaining.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭why so serious?

Say it would be mad altogether, he's able catch bullets with his teeth and the whole shebang!

Went to see it recently, 1st half was brilliant, he had a couple of different things that I hadnt seen before.
And I know where people are coming from with criticisms of the 2nd half but I had a great laugh, must say I was actually in pain at one point. It was a bit of fun and the whole show made for a great nite ou.
Went up to get hypnotised, didnt work tho, but afterwards, I was feckin glad it didnt! :p

It's enjoyable. First half will make you go wow, the second half is when he hypnotises people and that's funny. Defo worth a look anyway.

I have to say I was at his "thing" last year and it was VERY unconvincing.

Selected audience at best, where the things he threw landed surprisingly near the front every time. He really is complete rubbish IMO.

Oh and the Olympia is a complete melt to sit and watch a show in. Tightly crammed outdated seating arrangements.

    Save your money.

Fair enough if other people have other opinions but that's mine, honestly.

Seen him in Castlebar there 2/3 months ago.

Was not expecting much but but have to say he was very good!!

Can anyone tell me what time the actual show starts in the olympia??

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭hayser

It starts right on time at 8. There's a band that plays 3 songs. If you're sitting in the middle of a row you really should be seated by 8. The seats in the Olympia are very cramped and it's annoying to anyone who has to move out of your way aswell as being annoying for you tring to find your seat in the dark.

derren brown never claimed to have psychic powers.
he says it at the start of all his shows.
