cleaning slate tiles

I have cream slate tiles on my kitchen floor and find it very difficult to keep them clean. I have read through some older threads on this and alot of people mention cleaning floor with acid ......is this difficult/dangerous and what kind of acid should I be looking for????Also,is there any other solution........
