Is it legal for an employer to ask for a credit check on an job application... I can understand if it was a high paying CFO position but this is a 20 hrs part time retail job. ???

Very unusual. Doesn't the fact that someone checks your rating affect your rating?!

Yes. Many checks on your record can damage your rating.

Also the employer would have to be a member of the ICB to check your rating. I doubt any retail shops are on the ICB.

'Tis my understanding that only financial intuitions have access to ICB, Mortgage Lenders, Bank, Credit Cards etc.... the Job application is not for any of them.

I think there are agencies that any business can go to in order to have a credit check carried out on someone. If you are looking to rent a house a credit check is normally part of the procedure now and there are various companies that provide this kind of service.

I think part of the reason for carrying out a credit check for new employees is likely to do with trying to establish the risk of an employee stealing, presumably they believe that is a person with a bad credit rating is likely to be a higher risk for stealing.

Credit checks have been part of security clearance for years, at least in the UK. If you have a bad credit rating you will not get security clearance to work on government sites. It was only a matter of time before this trickled down to ordinary jobs.

I've done my own credit check on the ICB site, all you need is the full name, date of birth and the address to complete it.

Is it possible that anyone can go in and do a check once armed with this basic info? Which of course would be on the CV.

They might be able to, but I believe that would not be legal.
