    Hi,
I'm thinking of returning to college after several years absence and as I don't qualify for a grant I wondered if anyone knows if things have changed much as far as getting student loans are concerned. Anyone finding it's more difficult now?
    Thanks in advance

I think getting loans in general have increased in difficulty to get, but I don't see why student loans would become way more difficult to get, especially if you hav some assets to guarantee your loan - your best bet is to start some research now with the various lending agencies, most if not all have a student officer who will go through the loan with you, but shop around and see what rates you can get

Maybe check to see if you are eligible for a back to education allowance maybe - make sure you explore every grant avenue!

I know its not a loan, but I applied for a credit card a while back and had no problem at all getting it. I mean it was kind of crazy the ease at which I was able to get one!? From what I have heard from friends, banks are having no problem dishing out the cash for students at the moment, but obviously personal circumstances would have a huge bearing on this.

Student debt doesn't register as a bad debt for either the bank or the student if you should, ahem, forget to repay it.

Thanks for the help. My local welfare office told me that the Back to Education Allowance only applies to students doing a H.Dip, so I suppose that's out of the question.

I don't have any personal assets that would satisfy a bank, but I do have someone who might guarantee a loan. I'm worried about it though because if the economy hasn't picked up and I can't get a job immediately afterwards this person might just end up having to pay it with me paying her back later.

I've applied for a maintenance grant but I don't know if I'll get one. I've been so busy I haven't even had time to research how much it is. I've been out of college a long time but I remember that when I did have a grant I needed to have it supplemented by my parents, which isn't something they would do now, so I suppose I'll have to get a loan even if I do get a grant.

Anyway thanks for the advice, it is very encouraging.
