Another idea: Forgotten classic film club

This is an idea I was thinking about this morning, posting this to get some feedback on it.

Not to be confused with our very own film club (where we actually meet up to go to see films in the cinema) this is an idea to provoke some more interaction on the film forum itself. A basic outline: every month one user - anyone who wants to participate can put themselves forward - picks a film they think is due a reevaluation or deserves more attention. Anyone who wants to can then go and watch the film, and say a week or two later everyone comes back and discusses it.

Preferably, it would be something that would be available cheaply and easily (and most importantly, legally!). To pick a purely random example: someone wants to discuss Following - Christopher Nolan's oft-forgotten first film - after watching Inception. It's available for a fiver on Amazon. Anyone who wants to can pick it up there or in the shops or whatever and watch it. Everyone comes back and discusses it a fortnight later.

Anyway, just putting it forward. In my eyes, it would be a great opportunity to promote in-depth discussion about specific films and more interaction between users. Again, it wouldn't be like film of the week back in the day: the aim would be very much on more unpredictable choices rather than the better known. It wouldn't be as much fun discussing The Empire Strikes back for the nth time :pac:

Not going to be workable if no-one's interested, so just putting it forward for some feedback :)

I think this is a great idea. :) One thing I've never really done much is watched a film critically.

This would be a good way to start, so I'm all for it.

Ah yea, we used to do this a few years back here with Film Of The Week.

Was actually thinking of this again the other day.

Yeah, it would hopefully be kind of like the user-picked films of the week that were running for a while. Unfortunately, it's pretty much impossible to go back to the voting method after the disaster that got it shut down in the first place.

The way I was thinking was that out of everyone interested someone is randomly picked to choose a film - not their 'favourite' film necessarily, they're welcome to pick something they haven't seen too if they want to finally get around to it! Other users can then veto that choice if the majority is likely to have seen it. Needs a bit of tidying up, just trying to figure out the most effective way of getting a variety of lesser known films picked. Hopefully a gap between picking the film and discussion would also promote more people actually tracking down the film and watching it, which wasn't always the case with film of the week!

Yea, I'd be up for it considering the Boards Film Club itself is based in Dublin........and me being on the other side of the country :pac: so this will make a fine level for me.

Yeah I'd be up for this. But maybe every two weeks or so?

Yeah it would be a way to get everyone involved. It's often easy to forget Ireland isn't just Dublin and Galway :pac:

As regularly as people want it really :) If people can get their hands on stuff quickly, we can keep it going at a faster pace! A fortnight should be fine, a week might be pushing it for people to actually track down the film in question. Assuming of course people are trustworthy enough not to take certain easier options *looks around suspiciously*

Get people to take a picture of the DVD with their username written on a piece of paper beside it. :pac:

I'm not here long and I often wondered why something like this wasn't in place, I'd love to do it.
