    As above

Basically I have been informed by all manner of folk to import the files into cubase etc etc, but therein lies a long process. Particularly when you have a large vinyl collection like mine.

Equally I have been told that all the recored player thingys export bad sound quality.

    What to do?????

Mods feel free to move if this is not the right forum for this qs

There is another *easy solution* - not cheap option though.

I've heard of DJ using a wav recorder that you can just plug into a DJ mixer... meaning that you could just keep it running and play the records one by one and cut them up after and batch convert them with a program cool edit or other wav editors (most do this)

Some common sense and preparation of the levels etc... will mean you can rip them off very quickly.

You'd probably have to aks in either the DJ forum, or look online for a specialist DJ equipment supplier to grab one of these boxes... they've made them a doddle to use from what i've heard.

Careful. Different OSs have different file size limits... Record too many records in a row and bad things will happen.

Read the post, it's not about the OS, separate unit.

I'd suggest YOU read the post.

Even if it IS a seperate box the poster suggest loading these massive files into an OS:

So unless this box runs cool edit (etc) he's gonna be bringing massive wav files into an OS.

Do some research. The boxes i'm on about are user friendly - not something that will export a file so large that it will bork an OS, also they come with specifications, software and such.

Like may say 'can record 4 hours of audio and export it' 'supported systems include... etc... then the OP can see what's what...

Speculation without research is a bit empty.

    Cheers for the responses lads.

Am I right in saying that both time and effort wise this is going to be a big process regardless?

Depends on how many records and if you're comfortable with batch processing and wav editing... some people don't mind sitting down for hours cutting files up, some people do - there are no quick ways of really doing this to end up with usable files.

Depends on what you are converting and how badly you want it. There may even be people willing to to this for you as a service, but costly.

As you made no specific suggestions of gear (twice now) and don't know what OS the guy is running it was, and IS, a fair warning.

and ? - i could say that leaving it lying around that the OP could trip on it.

Why didn't you go check some physical units to see if there were issues with brands/models that had users across different OS complaining that they couldn't drag a 40gig file out of it into their OS.

Or like from experience with those actual units.

I'f i'd suggested he record direct into a laptop then i could see why you are raging... otherwise... not really.

    A) I'm not raging; on fact I rarely rage about anything
    B) You're still giving extremely vague recomendations (investigate a 'wave recorder box')
    C) What in the heck is wrong with giving a reasonable caution? Many people still use XP and those folks are gonna run into problems WAY before a 40GB file, potentially. Why not, if you ACTUALLY want to help the guy, ask what OS he's on and then help him, with your knowledge of 'wave recorder boxes,' choose something appropriate you can vouch for?

And if you DON'T know any of this stuff, why are you SO detemined to show my very reasonable warning is silly?

    Here, let me help you:

hey OP, what OS are you on? How much money you looking to spend? Does your computer have Firewire or USB 2? Ate you planning at recording these initially at CD quality then converting to MP3? Or recording them directly as MP3s?

Now NJ, when he answers, you recommend him something specific. Or a few things.

    Everyone is happy.

Please don't take this the wrong way.

'Use reaper' - how is that any less vague about OS and computer requirements even before the OP was asked than:-

You'd probably have to ask in either the DJ forum, or look online for a specialist DJ equipment supplier to grab one of these boxes... they've made them a doddle to use from what i've heard.

For his needs, he is better off asking in the DJ forum or approaching a decent DJing retailer than speaking to us geeks to be flooded with info he doesn't need.

Without recommending anything specific (and i wouldn't even recommend anything because of the vinyl angle - like the guys gonna need to wash them first) - which is why i told him to try over at the DJ forum as they would have a few among them to help with this.

If he wants to have a go and record direct into PC, then thread belongs here - if he's inclined towards DJ angle then i'll move thread over to that forum and prune.

I've seen the devices mentioned, they work ok, but wouldn't know what models are better than another for the spec.
