my youngest scored quite high in these tests except for maths. I know there are age related, he is 10 but only scored 8 per centile . Should I be concerned?

I used to be an instructor on the CTYI (many years ago now) and I am now a lecturer in a maths related area. I have 3 kids myself and my research is in the education area.

At 10, I wouldn't worry too much, find the subject he most enjoys and encourage him at that. It may be a case of disinterest in maths, I had zero interest in it at 10 (I was a languages geek) but now it's my focus. The fact that you are engaging with his progress and are interested enough to ask the question is actually more important than his scores, I think.

You might try seeing if he likes Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu) and if he enjoys the creative aspects of that it can be used quite effectively to encourage maths exploration.

A child may be of exceptional abilty in some areas, but not maths. Also you need to take in to account that many of the maths concepts he will have met in this assessment would not yet have been covered at school .What are his Drumvondra/Sigma results like?

more confused than ever.scored 89 percentile on the drumcondra maths ,[Teacher says he really needs to do work on his tables!]
Would have thought he'd have done better than 8 with ctyi[ and I am aware that the test is age related.]
Suppose the query might stem from 11 year old brother who has iq of 130 and managed to score 17 on the drumcondra maths test.

Remember that the test only shows a snapshot of a day and time.
