Private lessons - Cork.

    So hey there guys,

First off I want to compliment you lot on the kinda-cool-tight-knit community thing you have going on across the many boards I've spent the last two weeks perusing in search of answers, enlightenment and eventually my end goal of attaining private lessons in a martial art, preferably Wing Chun, though it is looking increasingly unlikely with the reticent, and likely super busy guys at WCireland not managing to get back to me with any information at all.

So it is to you I present my desperate plight. - I am hard working bartender, hard working in so much as that I work bizarre and generally unforgiving hours which makes it very difficult to commit to a regular schedule; it just varies too much. I am in pretty good shape given my lifestyle of propping up either one side of the bar or another but sadly I am a paler shade of flab to what I once was, though I've renewed my gym membership and that shall be remedied in due course. I guess what I'm looking for most is just some direction, guidance or any sort of information you guys could share with me, I'd be willing to travel a fair distance and am an enthusiastic student for sure - I'd prefer a martial art that is more centered on striking though at this point just getting up and running is my main concern. Thanks for reading this giant ball of text and I'll forward to seeing a reply or two, hopefully.

    Cheers Alan.

    Hi Alan,

I know how you feel. I worked as a barman for about 10 years in Dublin and it was hard fitting in training. You said you are willing to travel, well I have a school in Blanchardstown. www.wingtsun-blanchardstown.ie

Alternatively there are independent Wing Tsun schools in Kerry (Tralee, Killarney and Listowel). www.wing-tsun.name

This place, www.schoolofchinesemartialarts.com, teaches Wing Chun through the same organisation as John O'Riordan in Wing Chun Ireland. They are based in Kilkenny.

Wing Chun is taught here in Carlow. www.carlowmartialarts.org

Or you could do Muay Thai in Cork. Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Michael

There are some really good Muay Thai gyms in Cork. Definitely worth considering if you're looking for a striking art where you can get private lessons.

I work in a bar too, it's just not healthy. when you say wing chun I automatically think John O' Riordan in the Douglas scout hall. I think He does private classes. Most of the thai clubs train 6 times a weeek and probably do private training. It might be worth heading up to Thompson house on McCurtain street.
The guys at the boxinng clinic in Frankfield are really good. You can contact them through facebook

    Hey there gents,

Just want to say a big thank you for all the replies I've got, been up the walls with work so have been delayed in replying but wow, what a response. Muay Thai seems to really be the way to go in Cork, although I had my heart set on Kung Fu my attempts at getting onto John O'Riordan continue to be in vain. Mayhaps I shall throw in the proverbial towel on that end and look into Muay thai further. Thank you again.

    Alan.

    Hey,

I used to train in Wing Chun and Seven Star Praying Mantis under John O' Riordan many moons ago. The last time being when he moved from town to Douglas. I don't know anymore about how difficult it is to join up. When I was there the classes ranged from 4-25 people on any given night (Tuesdays Wing Chun and Thursdays 7 Star Mantis). The Wing Chun was always more popular.

I always found him very approchable and down to earth. If hes still in the same line of work he's very often uncontactable (Fire Brigade) and would often have one of his top students take the class. His classes are about 2 hours the first hour being cardio work(very tough) and the second hour techniques and sparring. He never taught anything he couldn't demonstrate and by **** the man is good. He used to give private lessons in both styles including weapons in my day, I assume he still does.

If you are interested just pop down to the douglas scout hall on a training night. I would very surprised if John didn't give you the time to answer any questions. Just after dabbling in other things (Karate etc, with some uber-serious sensei) John is a really easy guy to get on with.

    Best of luck.

P.S. If you decide on Muay Thai I might recommend Anthony Corkery in Cork. Not sure where he's teaching now. McCurtain street maybe ? I saw him in action as a bouncer one messy night in a bar I worked and he can look after himself !!
