i just thought to my self today if there was a way of making an impression handing cv's into shops such as topman , top shop and the fashion shops etc. is it worth it handing in cv's in your own style, would that make an impression on someone working there , or would you make an effort and then hand it to the cv ?? i went into topshop handing in a cv and i got looked at a bit weird?? i was wearing a black polo from fcuk buttoned to the top with jean shorts that roll up at the end with a pair of those boats shoes felt a bit weird walking into the top getting looked at? just wondered was a way to look handing cv's into fashion stores / cloths shops

Unless you're specifically routing out the manager, then I wouldn't worry about it. If you're just handing it to a sales assistant behind the counter, I doubt they care.

Wouldn't bother dressing any way in particular, unlikely you'll be giving it to the manager, concentrate more on sprucing up your CV.

I work in Topshop and we're constantly receiving CVs. If a person seems to be extra spirited/interested, generally nice, I'll write a note on the CV for the manager.

I wouldn't worry too much about clothes until the actual interview, then you should be showing knowledge of the store's trends and general fashion ethos. Use the websites for more information and be up to date with the stock. A large part of my interview was based around the current trends and influences for the collections.

I got a job in topshop years ago the day I handed in a CV. Manager liked the look of me (wanted my arse I later found out), asked me to come back for an interview after lunch. Got the job. It helped that I wasn't wearing any of their cheap ****e.

so i should just wait till an interview to make the extra effort

i was told that it does make an impression when handing in a cv but i didnt know sales assistants can write a note on it :) then that would help

A girl came into my shop one day to hand in a CV (it's not a clothes shop, but still). She was wearing shorts, flipflops, a string top and was loudly gossiping with her friend all the way up to the counter. She made such a bad first impression. Her CV was never passed on, because if she couldn't be bothered to dress properly for job hunting it's doubtful she'd have been professional enough for the shop.

I'd definitely recommend making an effort.

Gotta agree with Faith, I work in a shoe shop and most of the people who hand in CVs hand them to the sales assistants who then pass them on. We get people who come in in tracksuits and dirty trainers and it does leave an impression it will be commented to the manager when passing it along.

It's not that hard to do it, you don't need a tiara and a ball gown. Clean, neat, ironed and appropriate clothing is all you need. I don't know why you wouldn't just do it, it's not that much extra effort like, you may as well.

im a neat person anyway i dont like dirty cloths and dirty shoes im forever buing new runers and topman pomps!! by all means i would never walk up chatting or in a track suit just about to hand in a cv. even though im handing handing to a sale assistant im still the manners eg "may I"," thanks you " amd the casual "cheers" :D:p haha
i think you should be clean and presentable anyways if you seeking jobs, it thinks it common sense but like proper;y dressing up all fancy is ridiculous !! and going to an interview wearing a suit ??listening to people thoses days are gone haha

i wore smart casual to and interview in fcuk, that seemed to work! i didnt get the job but my mate that works in there said that they had 23 people being interviewed that day and they only took one full time and one part time . . hmm makes me feel a tiny bit better

    Hi OP,

I know I sound like a complete grammar/spelling Nazi but run a spell check over your CV and/or get someone to read it for you before handing it in anywhere!

Workin in topshop, id defo say wear something trendy, not necessarily from topshop, but certainly reflecting the latest trends anyway. its good to show you know something about the current fashion

Topshop and American Apparel only hire cool people. Maybe we're just not cool enough for them.

We give everyone a chance, i was in no way cool going into my interview. in fact, i stil am not cool!!

iv noticed that there are "cool" indie kids or what ever in top shop and feel like i wouldnt fit in , yes i liek fashion and wear nice cloths and have my own style but i dont have the hair etc hehehe joking

just a tiny point to add: many stylists and fashion designers dont all wear nice cloths , some wear ****yy cloths etc but make great fashion

Ya just get into the clothes that come in because we have to wear the brands clothes. there are all types of styles in my work anyway

Worked in retail as assistant and as a manager through the years and it definatly makes a difference if you look fashionable AND neat. My staff always feed back to me how a person handing in a cv looks and I used to do the same when I had to hand in cv's to managers in the past.

maybe if i dress in a style thats mine when im handing in a cv to a sales advisor and they dont dont think my style suites me and then that might reflect on what they say to the manager??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 67 ✭✭LC_ugh

wed usually only comment if you looked ridiculous, or had a style that suited the brand

what do you mean? out in banch when i hand in cv's its almost like they are giving me dirty looks , i have worked in river island and i still get asked by people in there what would i put on the floors mannequin ( my old work mates ) ;P

i found that the people that are in town are nice and easy to talk to and out by mine they're just not , im more of weird indie kid than a suburb kid haha
