Dublin Bus Monthly/Annual Tickets

    Hi Guys,

After recently moving to Dublin I need to start using either monthly or annual Dublin Bus tickets to try and cut down on the cost.

I am currently in full time employment and so would presume I am eligible for the tax saver tickets. I am also a part-time masters student so would like to know if this leaves me eligible for student monthly tickets.

Ideally I would be able to purchase student monthly tickets at the discounted prices through my employer availing of the tax benefits.

Considering my position if anyone has any suggestion of what would be the most cost effective way to do this I would be very grateful.

    Thanks in advance.

Nice idea but it wont work.

I'm a full time worker doing part time(more like full time but anyway) education.

The student cards are for only full time students. On the form you sign for it you are declaring you are such doing at least a certain number hours of week.
Now to be honest once you have a valid college ID they arent going to care.

However try to claim from an employer that you are a full time student to Irishrail/etc.. They will cite that rule to you.

Your choice is either take the tax saver or use your ID to get a student travel card.

The tax saver one will save you more. 20 euro or so a month assuming the standard rate of tax and the bus/rail annual ticket. If you are on the higher rate then it is definately worth it.

The student card is good if you cant commit to an annual ticket. Something i would suggest is thinking about if you really need that bus/rail card. As in i found myself using trains all the time and i got by on buses with a handy pack of tickets every 3 months. Saved net 40 euro over those 3 months.

    Thanks for the reply.

You were right in what you said.

They were mutually exclusive and while I think I could have got away with using the student option(75e for 30 non-consecutive days) the taxsaver option worked out cheaper over the year.

I've got the student one to tie me over for the month until the taxsaver comes in.

    Cheers.
