    How about one of these?

As it's usually one of them that wins it!

Trophies of some sort are usually considered more appropriate for a Captains Prize, where the winner receives a momento that that they can proudly display on their mantlepeice for years to come, and is representative of their achievement in rounds leading up to, as well as on the day of victory itself.

Hi delighted to see your post.
I am in the same boat as your dad this year & I am not very sure what the prizes should consist of.
I have 9 prizes to get for 9 dirfferent catagories so after searching through boards I think I will go with crystal for the main prizes & maybe golf related or electronic prizes for the remainder.
Has your dad given you any ideas what he might have in mind ?

I think a plasma T.V. caused this issue:

what is the maximum value a prize may be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭tomaschonnie

he's got the prize now, a hamper from McCambridges in Galway that cost €100.

lol @ Tullamore prize debacle - a bit over the top?!

What? A basket full of brown bread, hope the winner doesn’t have a wheat intolerance…

He’ll end up violently ill and dislike your dad for years….

Crystal is a major no-no i think for prizes. Stick to golf prizes, and ones that can be exchanged by the winners.

The only way i'd want any kind of crystal is as a small memento of the day i.e. a small piece that perhaps had the name of the comp and the year etc and that could possibly be engraved with my name on it. (i'm talking small here though, not a bloody wine decanter or a fruit bowl).

Who the hell wants crap like that.

The main prize for the winner should be golf stuff. If i want a plasma i'll go to DID or Harvey Norman or give a lad i know in Blanchardstown who specialises in ones without remote controls or receipts a shout.

For the majors in club golf I think Crystal/Silver is most definitely appropriate.
I know that I would much rather win some silverware/crystalware (to add to my measly collection :)) that I could display or not, but at least have forever.
My father always had golf prizes in the house and I have grown up the same way, I want to have something to remember.

I would answer your question with "who the hell wants yet another stand bag or pair of shoes?" There is only so much golf stuff that you want/need. If you cash it you have nothing to remember your win by.

To me the only thing worse then a voucher/golf prize is when you get something "personal". We have had a few dubious paintings and the like the last few years and I think its a silly choice. You have no idea if the guy who wins will be 80 or 18 but you can be sure they will have very different tastes.

The best I have seen in a while was a small silver cream jug piece that resembled the claret jug slightly. Small and tasteful and easy to keep or display.

My father in law was captain in a well known dublin club last year and the prize was a good wristwatch which was ingraved on the back plus a glass trophy. Personally I hate crystal and always give it to my Mam when I win it. I like golf prizes which at least you can exchange. A good prize I won last year was a piece of Samsonite cabbin luggage, one of those pull along travel bags which fits into the overhead bin on an aeroplane and conforms to the size regulations.

Do you not read people's posts?! Read my post again. Particularly the bit where i said a memento of the day is fine for the winner, but that it should not encompass the whole prize.

I won a major in my club last year and the prize was a crystal candle stick holder. It's probably lovely to a 70 year old nun, but it now sits in my loft still in the box. I've no comeback on it whatsoever and i'm stuck with it, until it's inevitably thrown out/given to charity.

As for your "who the hell wants yet another stand bag or pair of shoes?" question...

Golf is the type of sport whereby there's always something that you need - be it shoes, balls, raingear, a new umbrella, gloves. Even if they can't spend it straight away, at least it would be sitting there in credit until there was something the did need.

Between GreeBo and Mister Sifter you have the two sides of prize-giving. You'll never please everyone. Personally I'm with Mister Sifter. We had our Captain's last week - I came 6th and won a crystal bowl with the club name, competition and date engraved on it. If you haven't won one before it's a great prize and a reminder of your achievement, but if it's your 15th piece of crystal it is utterly useless. Like MS, mine will be going in the attic, and I'll take my one shot cut as the major achievement of the day.

Golf gear is good as people can always use it or exchange it, but as the main Captain's Prize it's always a tough call. Last year's prizes were watches, and they were very popular, but it's not to everyone's taste.

How about a ceramic lamp with a heron on the base, wrapping its neck around the lamp stem. Yep, got one of those too!

I have 1 piece of crystal on display and only because I havent "attic'd" it yet. I am confident however, that I will, when Im older want to take these out and display them as a reminder of my younger years.

I have read your post fully the first time, thanks.
I happen to disagree with you opinion, as is my right on a public forum.
Personally I dont want yet another pair of shoes, indistinguishable from the other 10 pairs coupled with a little crappy "souvenir of the day". To me that is as everlasting and memorable as the complimentary shoe bag you get for playing corporate events. I'd rather a quality golf prize over an average golf prize + an average memento; but above that Id prefer a quality "trophy".

I dont believe that anyone would throw out or give away a silver trophy that they won. Perhaps when you are older you will feel differently about these things.

I think that most people who play golf to the sort of level where they are wining majors have reams of golf things, with more added each birthday and christmas.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets sick of trying to exchange golf prizes again and again, desperately inventing reasons to spend vouchers, etc on yet another golf jumper or driver, etc.

I'm with Greebo on this. If i ever win our captains/presidents prize i want a trophy of some sort to remind me (and others:D) of what i'd achieved. I dont want a few vouchers and a poxy little keepsake, you can get those in any old competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,269 ✭✭✭Rowley Birkin QC

25 year old here that will have no hope of winning any of the prizes here but from my perspective the crystal/silver stuff is very unappealing. A small memento is fair enough but anything larger is just naff.

Golf is a hugely financially demanding pastime, maybe a hefty voucher for a local golf shop? Series of vouchers for some of the top courses in the country?

A photo of you collecting your prize from the Captain will also remind you of your achievement........

Can't stand these crystal bowls etc as prizes. A prize should be something the winner can enjoy/use. And as previous posters have suggested, golf gear will always be a good prize. It is after all a golf competition you played to win the prize. A perpetual trophy however is a nice touch. Your name will be put on that and every Captains/Presidents prize it will be on display and people can always pick it up to see who previous winners were

A quality prize is not necessarily a piece of crystal to impress your friends / family, or yourself, whilst you sit in on a Friday night watching Late late or Johnathon Ross for the years to come, and as a side note im no spring chicken, but ill take a relevant golf prize IE a pair of shoes or even a sleeve of balls for that matter over a piece of pottery or crystal.

Ive won 3 monthly medals and the ****e crystal and medal that comes with them, as above Ill take a voucher or bag or shoes over any crystal any day, and as above im not a young aspiring golfer who trades golf gear for memories on a shelf.

Ive won a few majors and am happy to continue to be able to walk into the golf shop and update and change any piece of equipment that may take my fancy with out reaching for my wallet.

For me, your on your own, that is with the other crystal loving sit in Friday / Saturday night im preparing for the captains day / medal tomorrow cock talk and then slow the whole course down shooting Gross 100.
You know Ill never get sick of exchanging prizes or spending vouchers. GreeBo you need to realize that as strongly as you feel there is a need for crystal or other decorative shelf / house ****e there is me who like's the new shoes or balls or jumpers or tees or polos or gloves or bags or clubs or socks or tee's or wetgear sets or .................

I'm captain of the local society. Getting a painting done of the 1st hole of the golf club.

Doesn't sound like something that would appeal to me or indeed the family of many a golfer who already laments you gone playing golf which the painting would be a further reminder of. A painting of a golf hole is really only appropriate to hang in a golf club I think.
Besides if you are a society do you not play a range of different golf clubs around so why have a painting commissioned of one particular club. Also what's significant about the first hole, is it the signature and most memorable hole on the course?

Well we play 3 of our outings in Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. I am getting it commissioned by an artist in Killarney.

I have requested the 1st of Killeen, wanted to get the beauty of the lake and mountains in the background, so its more than just a painting of a golf hole

    Something like this

I know I missed the boat but for me there has to be an incentive to win, I would suggest two things for winning captains prize:
    1. Perpetual trophy like the claret jug for instance!
    2. Material prize which can be any of the following:
      • Reduced club membership for following year
      • Pro Shop voucher to the value of €xxxxxx
I think the trophy and pic's taken can be displayed in your house while you feel you are actually gaining something with the other prize to be used as you see fit!

@Greebo, if you ever run out of idea's for what to spend vouchers on then you are winning too much:D
