'Wire' star swaps Baltimore beat for Shannon wedding

    THE star of US President Barack Obama's favourite TV programme will marry his Irish fiancee in her family's castle today.

    But Dominic West, alias Detective Jimmy McNulty from 'The Wire', does not expect to be mobbed by thousands of screaming fans descending on Glin, Co Limerick, for his wedding to Catherine FitzGerald, daughter of Desmond FitzGerald, the 29th Knight of Glin.

    "I'm really lucky because 'Wire' fans are quite discreet people. I've meet thousands of them over the years and they never make a fuss, which is great," West said.

    Although filming of the ground-breaking drama series ceased two years ago, the 40-year-old said he expected a number of famous faces from the Emmy Award-winning HBO series to attend his nuptials.

    "There are a few people coming over from 'The Wire'. I invited them all -- but most actors, I'm delighted to say, are working which is unusual," he said.

    "Had I married younger, I'm sure they would all have been out of work and able to attend."

    Ancestral

    The Sheffield-born actor's wedding is taking place in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Glin followed by a reception at Ms FitzGerald's ancestral home, Glin Castle.

    The couple, who have three children, Dora (3), Senan (2), and Francis (1), met while studying at Trinity College, in Dublin. "I was studying English literature, Catherine was doing English and history. It was from 1991 to 1994 and well before my acting career. Myself and Catherine have a lot of shared history together as well as three children," said Mr West.

    About 300 guests are expected at the wedding and reception afterwards in a marquee on the banks of the Shannon. West, who before studying at Trinity, attended Eton College in the UK with the now British prime minister David Cameron, said he was hoping that by marrying at a mature age, the couple's wedding day will be a more sedate affair.

    "It's different when you're 40. Hopefully, it will be a bit more relaxed and we'll enjoy it. We've got a Heineken tap and a nine-piece local band called Saloon Star to aid the party," he said.
