This looks great fun. Pity they can't have burning instead of throwing - but no doubt pesky "urban academics and faceless EU bureaucrats" would prosecute over pollution
    RISE!
    [RURAL IRELAND SAY ENOUGH!]
    PRESENTS

THE GREGNAMANAGH ANNUAL BOOK THROWING FESTIVAL

    August 15, 2010

Join us in throwing out the books this year at Gregnamanagh, a stronghold of RISE, the rural organisation that supports rural life.

Ireland’s cultural traditions are under assault everywhere we turn. Rural life is under attack. RISE up and join us at the Gregnamanagh Book Throwing Festival.

Rural Ireland is better without books. Books undermine country pursuits. Science and law are being used by an intellectual elite to take away decent people’s constitutional entitlements. Rule by urban academics and faceless EU bureaucrats must end.

    Plain people of Ireland Unite!!!

The Book throwing ceremony will be opened by KEVIN MYERS of the Irish Independent

2 PM: Irish Junior National Book Throwing Finals

3 PM: Irish Senior National Book Throwing Finals

    4PM: National Tractor Pulling Competition

    5PM: Stone lifting

    6PM: Hare Coursing Demonstration

    ADMISSION FREE TO ALL GAELS

    BIG PRIZES!

FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY. CRECHE FOR CHILDREN.

Sponsored by the Irish Vintner’s Association & the Ward Union Stag Hunt

Oh dear. "Rural Ireland is better without books" - yet "decent people’s constitutional entitlements" are protected by a little book known as the constitution. Perhaps the brains behind this haven't quite thought it through...

Still there's no fun like an old-fashioned nazi-style book burning, or in this instance, "book throwing".

Everyone's a winner. Well done to the the Irish Vintner’s Association & the Ward Union Stag Hunt for sponsoring such a progressive, family-orientated day's entertainment. And also to journalist Kevin MyArse too - he would really benefit in a country aspiring to illiteracy.

PS I see the welcome is only for "Gaels"; do I qualify? One of my grandparents was English, and if the same standards apply as those that separated Aryans from Jews in 1930's Germany, perhaps not. Aw Shucks :(

Came from a reliable source who I know, and has me on a mailing list - source hasn't spread intentional spoofs before as it would be discrediting. That said if it is a joke, it well got me...

I wouldn't expect it to be Green Party propaganda as it would backfire badly on them - equally as it is fresh I wouldn't expect it to be on the RISE website yet. The mystery thickens...

A conspiracy by the Green Party, PETA, the Bambi appreciation society and Greenpeace.

    Darn.

ODS has a little blushing face - having further checked, it turns out it is indeed a spoof :o

Mods, please lock as appropriate just in case it gives anybody any ideas

That'll teach me to trust "reliable" sources...
