NCT Question about Malfunction Indicators

I don't have to do the NCT until next year but the ABS pump is gone in my car.

    ABS light stays on.

It appears to be a fail by the NCT.

Why are things which are not "tested" and not critical in how the car runs be failed.

Mechanic told me the breaks are fine and it just that the ABS is no longer working and it is not worth the money to repair.

ABS adds significantly to the safety of the car and more so to other road users that you might not like to kill.

    So good on NCT.

Very easy for ignorant lazy mechanic to put you off fixing something that could save you or somebody elses life. Get a new mechanic.!! And get the car fixed even with second hand parts.

    Agree..
There is a difference to drive a car which didn't have ABS at all, and the car with broken ABS.
On cars without ABS there was special valve which adjusted brake fluid pressure for rear wheels, which prevented rear wheels to lock before front ones. (brake force was spreaded about 70/30 between front/back - of course depending on weight put on the back of the car).
In cars with ABS, there isn't anything like this, because ABS takes care about all wheels not to lock down.

Reassuming, car with broke ABS can be very dangerous, because if you press brake pedal strong enough to lock back wheels, but not strong enough to lock front ones, and your car will be even a tiny angle from going straght, it will just start skidding.
The same effect as handbrake turn.

If you're not a professional rally driver and can control all the skids even before they really appear, I would advise to fix ABS.
    It's not an expensive thing.
