While the buyers involved may not be short of a few bob, its a crazy amount of money to pay for an unproven gelded horse, unless it turns out to be a top horse it will never come close to regaining their money.

its a lot of money to pay for a horse that may never even make the racecourse.

Solerina's son was lame a few days before. He will be sold privately.

The sales were quite strong. I think the average was up from €23k to €27k, although the median was only marginally up from €15k to €15.5k. I'd say a lot of the big prices paid were a mirage. Is it any surprise that Presenting is the top lot at €320k and then a Westerner tops that at a convenient €325k. Presenting had a good sale and I think he had 8 of the top 20 lots. Also nice to see McManus, Magnier, Potts and Giggenstown very active and that's before the English boys got involved.

The high end is certainly there as is the middle tier where we were trying to buy, but the bottom end is gone completely. We managed to pick up lot 448, a 3 year old son of Oscar out of a four time winning mare. We paid €23k for him which was just under our budget and it was incredibly difficult to buy anything. If you liked a horse it went over our budget very quickly. I'd say we picked up this fella because some of the buyers had filled their books and his page isn't as strong as others and he's more of a Land Rover sale horse than a Derby sale horse. But very happy to have picked one up.

Yes. Apparently they've bought a few for JP to ride. Think he should retire myself!! Tom Magnier and Kieran McManus were stading in front of me at the Curragh on Sunday and I was thinking that they are the future of Irish flat and national hunt racing. While Tom scrubs up well, Kieran's tracksuit was a little out of place at the Derby sale last week. He scrubbed up a little better in a suit on Saturday.
