I have recently sold my car for small money and want to save up a bit of cash to buy something decent. My mate has offered me the use of a car for a few months. The problem is that he will be transferring his insurance to another car so the car won't have insurance. My own insurance is not due for renewal until 17th of July. The insurance company have told me I can do a temporary transfer to the other car but this can only be for two weeks. I can't insure the car after that as I do not own it.

Is there anyway I can insure this car without having to lie to the insurance company( which I'm not willing to do anyway )?

Don't you have a "driving other cars" cover?
If you do, you can drive his car, as it doesn't belong to you (most insurance companies state, that driving other cars is only for cars that doesnt belong to you)

Doesn't this usually only apply if the other car is already insured by someone else?

    No

I was also wondering about it.
I went through my insurance policy and all the terms and condition, and didn't find anything that would say it had to be insured.
I also contacted CustomerServiceLine of my Insurance company, and they confirmed, that car doesn't have to be insured by the owner, to make my cover for driving this car as "other car" valid.

There's only problem with few things.

    1. The car wouldn't have insurance disc. Guards are allowed to fine you 60 euros for that. Of course, not displaying disc, is not a serious offence, because you are insured to drive. And most likely they wouldn't issue a penalty for missing disc.

    2. Car has to be taxed by your friend before he gives it to you. Otherwise you can't get tax, without valid insurance policy for this car.

    3. Cover can be only third party, so any damage to the car, can't be covered.

Anyway, it's still legal to do it. If your insurance provides you with posibility to drive other cars and they insure you for that, so you are grand to do it, no matter if the owner of the car had insurance policy or not...

Do a temporary transfer for the two weeks.

Allow insurance to switch back to car 1 for a day.

Do another temporary transfer for 2 weeks.

That'll get you past the 17th!

in theory your driving other cars cover may not apply if you have sold your own vehicle. this is part of the t+c of my policy. i'm with quinn. bit of a messy area.

A was with Hibernian (current Aviva), now I'm with Allianz, and neither of them had such a clause.

if you don't own the car that's on your policy then in theory you have no insurable interest and therefore your policy is void etc. it's a messy area.

++ edit - the best thing to do is to contact your insurance company to clarify and not take advice from a forum

Heh.. Insurance company can tell you whatever they want.
But in case of any trouble, they can use their solicitors against you.
Sometimes it's better to go through their rules, terms and conditions yourself, discuss it on the forum, and pretty much know what you can and what you can't do.

I love the whole third party cover thing :p

Anywho, you've kinda snookered yourself. You've sold your own car, so your third party cover more than likely is not valid, as the third party only covers you if the car you are driving isn't your main car, and if your car is in a roathworthy condition etc.

You said you don't want to lie to your insurance company and tell them the car is yours to get it transferred, but you're already lying to them because the car you currently have insured isn't yours either!

It's simple, you've left yourself with two options in my eyes.

1."Buy" your friends car, or a different car cheap and transfer your policy onto it.

    2. Walk

And next time do your research before you try beat the system :p

My policy says nothing, that car can't be my main car. It just says it cant belong to me or be rented to me. But policies are different, so someone else might have different conditions.

He can ask his friend, to transfer ownership of the car into his name for that period. That would also work - of course if friend agrees to it.

He can also buy any car for 20 euros, and pretend it's his main car. Then he can easily drive his friends car on the clause about driving other cars.

IN my eyes that would of been the fairly obvious solution, but it won't work out for the friend as he'll be adding another 2 owners onto his car (the friend and then back into his name). Also if they happened to stop talking, or had an arguement, the friend would legally own the car for nothing, so a trust issue arises.

Fairly sure the car you're insuring would have to be road legal (it is with Quinn anyway), so if you can get a taxed and test car for 20 euro, pass a few on :P

    +1
With Sertus (Top Quote direct) and I sold my car and told the insurance company. My policy runs out on the 7th of July but I have cover on another car. I transfered my policy to the other car for a number of days that I needed it for. They sent me a text to confirm cover.

I'm not trying to "beat" the system. If you read my first post you will see that. I thought that by coming on here I was doing my research!

I have contacted my insurance company and they will do a temporary transfer to my mates car. this will be the insured car so the fact that I've sold my own car is not an issue. I'm actually thinking of buying my mates car so at the end of the two weeks I might be insuring it as my car so problem solved.
