Hi folks, it's Glastonbury time again. This is my favourite weekend of the year.

I've never been but I'm just wondering have any of the brothers or sisters on here been? Either as a punter or a participant?

Will defo go as it's on the to do list before I die:D

    Cool.

Yeah it's the grandaddy of them all and seems to cater for all tastes.

Maybe we'll hire a double decker bus and do a Music Forum summer holiday trip there for next year:D

What was the highlight of the 3 years Nova? Oh, were you a punter?

Went from about 94 to '00..

We used to go from Wed (when the site opens) - Tuesday.Get to pick the best site to camp (we usually went to the old cinema field before it moved), and chill for a few days before the mayhem starts.

It's nice to be able to choose from 3-4 bands at any stage of the day to go and watch.

only ever a punter, havent made it as a performer just yet!

As far as festivals go its just fantastic, everything about it, the food, the music, the atmosphere..

Musical highlights would probably be when roger waters performed in surround sound, bonkers stuff. Or when Queens of the stone Age played with Dave Grohl..

I was there in 99 it makes even the picnic look like a joke. It was and remains to be the best festival I have ever gone to, the atmosphere is incredible, the people are amazing and diverse and there is music everywhere.

Yeah (or at least to) open on the Wed, probably only a couple of thousand people there, but most of the food etc. stalls are in place and open. They also used to provide firewood etc on a first come first served basis so people woulnd't damage the trees. Used to be about 20 of us going each year, so we could pick a nice spot and get all the tents together in a circle.

I've never been a big fan of outdoor music, and I'm not a fan of dance, but by far the most memorable gig was Prodigy by a mile (95 i think).. Saw them a few times and they never fail to deliver, even in 97 (i think) when the place was washed out, and they lost sound for about an hour.. everyone stayed cos you didnt want to miss it when they got power again. Seriously loud and seriously intense.

Apart from that.. Radiohead were great (was around the time of The Bends) and loved Billy Bragg (in the acoustic tent).

Other notables, being amused watched 100,000 people dressed exactly the same singing "There's only one way of life and that's your own" with The Levellers ;)

And one sad memory of the death of Rory Gallagher being announced across the site in '95... (he had died the week before)

Just looking back at some of the act over those years, I'm amazed how many bands I didnt bother going to see.. pity.. spoilt for choice i guess..

That's really sad about Rory, I only ever saw him live once and he was a genius.

Muse were unbelievable tonight, does anyone know what make of guitar the singer uses? Really unusual looking and sounding.

That's cool PV, who where the highlights for you?

Muse this year were fantastic (on tv) By the way, just in case you haven't noticed, I like Muse:D

Muse are amazing live, worked at there gig there in november and its pretty fulfilling building an amazing set like that then watchin the gig! The sound they have live is fantastic, drums hit you in the chest like they should. Guitar and synth sounds are class. That amp he has onstage is just a cab he uses for feedback I think, all his amps are miced offstage. Sweet sounds he gets

Highlight from last year was prob Neil Young, White Lies and Blur, 2008 Was prob the Verve. So much stuff to see there.

Yeah.. Saw a bit of White Lies last year on the TV. They were cool.

I'm just watching on the Box. Nver been. 1 Day - Been saying that for the last 10 years. Cant compete with the 1st hand experience.. But I love watching it. Have Sky+ this year, so it the red button was cool.

Havent really got to watch loads of it.. I was out last night & was told Foals were on it - would have loved to have seen them.

Best thing from everything I saw was Toots & the Maytals. Such energy. Relentless.

Saw him play in Tripod about 2 years ago.. The heat in the place & he was wearing a Leather Top & Trousers. Full of life & had the crowd eating out of his hands. Great professional performer. Its not surprising that a crowd responds to the people on stage looking like they are enjoying themselves.

Theres been lots of great TV moments of Glastonbury over the years, that gives you a snapshot into the vibe.

Pulp playing Common People at the end of their Set in 199X was unreal. And I dont like them.

The Stooges stand out recently for me also. Massive Stage invasion. They really looked as if they were playing for the last time in their lives & were giving it their absolute ****ing all. Fair play. They were raw & energetic and definitely could provide a template as to how it should be done.

Didnt think much of Gorillaz this year. Hit & Miss at best.

Lou Reed was utterly dire. The little Chineese one doing the Duet with Albarn was shocking. I dont know why he likes Duets.. they're so yaG & I dont think he pulls them off - Besides, she had a crazy flat voice. Who agreed that would be entertainment?

Noticed too that The Saw Doctors were playing after Keane!

    Fair ****ing play!

And finally - Probably too much drivil in this post, but anyway..

There was a Guy playing on Wednesday there, probably a DJ, called Gino Ginelli.

Anyone remember the Ice Cream and this Ad? Random I know!

Real blast from the past. 'Night :pac:

That Chinese girl was pretty bad alright but did you see the XX? They were pretty awful. "Florence" joined them but she looked like she was lip syncing.

I could of course be wrong:D

Iggy pop was brilliant a few years ago, or was that last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jtsuited

anyone else find guest artists nauseating? As in when a band is playing and then some member of some other band comes on? Infuriates me.
Glastonbury has been ruined by this sort of codswollop imo.
Saw a bit of stevie wonder on the telly. awesome.

Never heard of the XX - any good? Sick of Florence & the Machine now. They probably need to **** off for a while & get some new songs, otherwise they'll run the risk of doing a Kaiser Cheifs.

Think the Stooges was 1 or 2 years ago. Best Gig I ever saw on TV.. Well, apart from Limp Bizkit @ Woodstock. That was utter Mayham. They were just playing the 1st Album, which was good. Only afterwards did they run out of stream & get v.sh1t.

He was very good. A real Entertainer. You have to have a ton of respect for him though, as he's a really high achiever.

However - He was being interviewed after & he's a bit of a Spacer. Even the interviewers were surprised about what he was like.

the xx are a wonderful studio band. productions are pretty out there with some interesting and wonderful rhythms going on.. they just dont translate over to a live situation at all.

Cool - Must check out YouTube.

Have they had any "Big" tunes or something particularly excellent?

if you're into the sparseness of joy division or early cure (with a more modern feel) then check this tune out.

definitly not to everyones taste but they have a certain likeable quality IMO

Def v good at their thing!

I think the big time has arrived to soon for them or caught them by surprise.

They were on Later a few weeks ago and were pretty ropey live. They sound good in the vids though, very very low fi.

If they can hang on in there and gain more confidence, they could be a great band.

I'm just back from this years festival and wow what an experience. I even got sunburned!!!

Edge playing with Muse was pretty great infact whether you are into their music or not Muse put on a great show. Thom Yorke on the Park stage rocked as did Broken Bells. Flaming Lips, Editors, Florence and the Machine, Grizzly Bear were other highlights for me.

It is much bigger than the music tho there is so much going on around the place.

I just watched that Muse/Edge version of Streets... looked like a fantastic atmosphere. Love or hate U2, that song is the perfect stadium anthem. The album version gets on my wick, but it's a completely different thing when they play it live. I've seen them play it here on pretty much all of their tours since the '87 Joshua tree gigs in Croker. That opening 6:4 guitar riff always gets the place going... then - bang! - into 4:4 bass/drums & the roof comes off

To be fair to Muse did a great version. Brave move on their part - most other bands would've prob asked Edge to play one their own songs - not the other way round. They really nailed it though - even the front man seemed surpised by the audience reaction to it...

Agree 100%, it was an amazing atmosphere and as you say the 6/4 intro is just the right length to build the anticipation and as soon as that 4/4 comes in the place was hopping.

It probably isn't cool to say I like this but I amn't that cool :D Really enjoyed it.
