Im thinking of getting an air at the moment and I though I'd ask ye lads if ye know of a good gun dealer in the country that has a good selection of air rifles. Little or no noise and cheap ammo as well as been able to shoot vermon in trees is whats making them attractive to me. :)

Is the 30 ft/pound air rifle expensive to buy. I know ye can get a Gamo 12ft/pound break barrel rifle for €275.

Mcbride in Athlone always sold air rifles, he loves them himself.
OP give him a bell and ask.
He had a lovely one a few months back. repeater and very accurate.

James himself is a class shot with one

im an avid air arms s410 xtra fac owner... im waitin on me licence for me brand new anschutz .17 hmr rifle.. but after usin a mates .17 hmr all last year alongside me pcp air rifle, i had better returns on the air rifle, i have mine zero'ed to 40 yds, 70 is one milldot over on me scope, and managed to bag one last week (after i pinged it on the range finder at 90 yds).. one and a half mildot holdover and it still knocked him down straight through skull using air arms field trophies pellet! definitely recommend the pcp air rifle (in fac uk terms)...
ye have the advantage of pure silence.. and nil flinch.. one handed bunny bag.. abit too easy.. nice clean shots.... ill never sell me air arms s410 xtra fac.. no way.. best yoke i ever seen for good clean copiuos bunny kills!
(btw i got mine in tannyoky in the north)

an .22 air rifle that is up on the 12ft/lb mark is an efficient and serious tool for rabbits at anything out to 40yards head shots mean an instant end to bugs , i'd imagine a 30ft/lb air rifle would be a devastating tool in the right hands, go for it :D

would you chose a springer over a precharged rifle. Is a weihrauch really as good as they say they are? thanks alot:)

i had a gamo viper max springer in .22 .... knocked a few bunnies with it, then i tried a pcp..... what can i say... go for the springer first.. it'lll teach ye... youll have to get used to the whole recoil physics... then when ye get a pcp and expeecting a flinch and it doesnt happen.... through a scope... a revelation!!

Wouldn't a 30 ft/lb air rifle limit your shooting range! especially if shooting into trees?? I mean its a bit OTT TBH-

I'd except any argument that allows 12ft/lb shots into trees but i like to hear something about the range of a 30ft/lbs unit before i went off shooting.

The other Irish problem here is that use of air rifles is prohibited if after birds.

jeez dunno bout the whole "shooting into trees" bizness at all... i prefer shooting towards ground!! but if push comes to shove and your wandering what happens when a .22 pellet returns to earth after bein fired from an angle of anything...... to put it bluntly.. it wont exactly be haileys comet doomsday!!

Unfortunately it is illegal to shoot any bird with an air rifle! ....

Its rules such as these that force hunters to opt for a "real gun"..

    Anyway just to answer Flanum:
I'm not 100% sure but IIRC a pellet fired from a 12ft/lb air rifle will only travel as far as a shot gun round might -- Say No 6.. The low weight and large sectional area of the pellet compound to give poor ballistic properties and hence the range is comparable with a shotgun round as these too have poor ballistic properties.

When the anti is upped to a 30ft/lb unit then your in a different game altogether..no one is saying for one min that you shouldn't worry as to where a pellet might land but first you have to try and gain an insight into the ballistic of a pellet before being able to forward points on dangers and such and the do's & don't's

Is the license process for an air rifle the same as for a 'real gun'? Might get one for shooting rats etc if it is easy & quick to get one

    Well it used to be.
    Hence all lads bought .22lr's

    It's €80 licence AFAIK.

would you chose a springer over a precharged rifle. :)

You'll have to make that call on yer todd!

But think about the recoil issues of each type of mechanism.
Some springers are now quite smooth.

A good air rifle is often more expensive than a 22lr so you ought to spend sometime researching your possible purchases. And to be honest your flogging a dead horse asking anyone in Ireland because the wealth of air rifle knowledge is just not present. Better of trying the UK,

    try airgunbbs in the UK?
