Is there a PCI express or similar expansion slot on the Dell Inspiron model 1545?

As a further guide I bought the laptop last year.

I am looking at adding audio or recording device to my laptop to record songs and instruments in a multitrack fashion. Any recommendations?

Laptops generally only have PCI Express Mini Card slots internally, these are generally only intended for network cards and Flash memory. Externally you probably have an ExpressCard slot, again there's not really any audio interfaces designed for this.

I think the only options you really have for multitrack recording are USB or FireWire based interfaces. I think FireWire is generally preferred for audio stuff - if your laptop doesn't have a FireWire port you can get a FireWire ExpressCard.

If you're loaded and want to use MADI http://www.thomann.de/ie/rme_hdspe_madiface.htm
Or this comes with a rack unit:
