Icons of their era,who in your opinion was the coolest. I know they were both in some great films.
    Newman(cool hand luke,butch and sundance,perdition etc,etc.)
    McQueen(Great escape,bullet,magnificent seven etc,etc.)
I liked both of them Newman was great, but IMO McQueen was Mr Cool.

Mods LOL was'nt sure were to put this as is not strictly a film question But reckoned if i put it in after hours it would prob be moved to Film..........who knows.

Ooooooh, I dunno. That's a toughie, both prime bastards in the golden era of cinema. Heh, this makes me wanna watch The Towering Inferno again where the 2 of them star together.

Both ice-cool men, I'd probably go with Newman considering he was always known to be a great guy in real-life. Though McQueen also lived up to his image with his off-screen life (Race driving in Le Mans, etc)

Plus one of my favourite quotes came from him when asked about not cheating on his wife of 50 years:
Why go out for hamburger when i have steak at home

    Classy guy. :pac:

McQueen probably cos he died still quite young and so didn't have the chance to go into a long decline (not that Newmans standards ever slipped to speak of)

I'd go with Newman. Both were pretty cool guys, but as said above, Newman was a cool guy in real life, where as McQueen was an asshole who did cool things. Plus, didn't Newman set up Barrettstown Kids? That's got to be worth brownie points.

I'd probably have to go with McQueen. It's a tough one, on the one hand you've got McQueen in Bullitt and The Magnificent Seven etc. but then you have Newman with Cool Hand Luke and The Hustler. I think McQueen was cool in a kind of macho way whereas Newman was cool in a slick way.

let me see, I heard a story about steve mcqueen turning up on the set of "thomas crown affair" wearing only denim shorts. He demanded that he keep all the clothes from the film, which included dozens of designer suits, etc. he was supposed to be difficult to work with, moody and took himself way too seriously, abit like marlon brando. Also he beat up a girlfriend or two in his time, source (same program on Biography channel). Plus he was never good looking either, looked like a chimpanze if you ask me.

Now paul newman. the man was a world renowned philanthropist, "a beatiful person" described by robert redford. gave tons to charity, which became a vocation almost. and has to be hands down the most handsome man to ever grace the screen!! unlike half the men in hollywood now, who are secretly gay, dont have their own hair or teeth and only do charity work to help promote a new movie or stagnant career!!! sorry bout the spelling.

I choose Newman!! a cool guy on and off the screen. Not someone just playing cool!!! who else could pull off the role of "cool hand luke?" I ask ye!!! rest in piece, the legend!!

Newman, no actor for me has ever replicated his effortless ice cool way. I'd pretty much turn gay for him.

Newman. As cool offscreen as his characters were onscreen.

Don't know about those items ,but he seems to have donated other stuff he got.But i would agree his charity work was no were near that of Newmans.
McQueen had an unusual reputation for demanding free items in bulk from studios when agreeing to do a film, such as electric razors, jeans and several other products. It was later found out that McQueen requested these things because he was donating them to the Boy's Republic reformatory school for displaced youth, where he had spent time during his teen years. McQueen made occasional visits to the school to spend time with the students, often to play pool and to speak with them about his experiences.

wow,I never heard that, the school for reformed kids thing. If that's his motivation for demanding the items, then good for him. Very admirable trait. I still think newman was cooler if only based on screen history and his character in Butch and sundance. the chemistry in that movie is class, they realy act like they were best mates. like emilio estivez and richard dreyfuss in steakout, looked like they could have realy been buddies!

    Emilio says "Thanks"

Paul Newman is my choice. He's so smooth. Hustler and still in The Colour of Money.

Paul Newman cool on and off screen

    For me Newman.
He was one of those guys that seemed to have everything and still was so grounded and decent.
It's hard to find a bad word to say about him.

'Cool Hand Luke' - 'nuff said.

    newman all the way.

Never saw McQueen as cool, just an actor taking ages to say his lines to get more screen time.

    For me, it's Newman.
Because of the acting really, Newman was always a better acting and to me that's just cool.

    Cool Hand Luke
    The Hustler
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
    The Sting

He was a top actor, well deserving of the plaudits he gets.

Has to be Newman for me. McQueen was infamous for bullying producers and directors into changing scenes and scripts to suit him. No doubt McQueen came across as being cool on screen from the likes of The great escape, Bullitt, The Getaway and The Thomas Crown affair.

Newman has his own roles like The Sting, Cool hand Luke, Butch Cassidy to be cool. He had a very varied career playing so many different characters. Although McQueen died very young, his career was not very prolific in the seventies.

McQueen for me. I'm surprised Newman is leading this pole. Always thought Newman acted cool, McQueen was just naturally cool.

    Paul Newman for me

Newman definitely, nothing against McQueen, but Newman was a great guy on and off screen, cool as a breeze, and one good looking motherfcuker in his day.

He was awesome in Road To Perdition as well, the scene with him, Hanks and the henchmen in the rain is superb.

McQueen was the cooler of the two. The "coolest" on the other hand....

Newman, hands down. One of the coolest men alive. Also supposedly a very decent man. Easy on the eyes too.

This. McQueen had a tough upbringing though.
Both were really cool on screen, but I think I prefer newman movies.

Top 5 McQueen movies (according to IMDB:
    1. The Great Escape
    2. Papillon
    3. The Magnificent Seven
    4. The Sand Pebbles
    5. The Getaway

    Top 5 Paul Newman movies
    1. The Sting
    2. Cool Hand Luke
    3. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
    4. The Hustler
    5. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Some good films by both, but much prefer newmans list

I've always thought Paul Newman was more cool as I always got a sense that there was much insecurity and therefore possibly, substantial cruelty behind McQueen's cool demeanor. He was threatening and dark, which isn't "cool", to me anyway.

Newman's winning personality, borne of self confidence and an obviously generous nature, especially in an environment such as Hollywood, made him the coolest.

While overall, "The Verdict", wasn't as special a film as say, "Cool Hand Luke", Newman gave a masterful performance. Well deserving of an Oscar, though many have said the award was a "makeup" for having missed out for other better roles.

McQueen did know his limits as an actor. But he was IMO the coolest.
I have to be careful because I'm a limited actor. I mean, my range isn't very great. There's a whole lot of stuff I can't do, so I have to find characters and situations that feel right. Even then, when I've got something that fits, it's a hell of a lot of work. I'm not a serious actor. There's something about my shaggy-dog eyes that makes people think I'm good. I'm not all that good.

Because of this thread, had a look around the net.Found some interesting bits on McQueen.
Terrence Steven "Steve" McQueen (March 24, 1930 – November 7, 1980) was an American movie actor nicknamed "The King of Cool."....................................................................................................................
He is recognized for performing many of his own stunts, especially the majority of the stunt driving during the high-speed chase scene in Bullitt. McQueen also designed and patented a bucket seat and transbrake for race cars.

LOL ............did'nt know that was his nickname when i started thread
