LeinsterParanormal have been asked by The History Press to write a book on the county of Carlow and it’s various ghosts. Besides the usual fare of haunted castles and shopping centre ghouls, the information we are really looking forward to hearing is local folklore and old ‘hand me down’ Carlow ghost stories.

If you know of any Carlow related ghost stories, send them in through the Haunted Carlow website. I don't think anyone has done a collection of ghost stories from specifically Carlow.

The only one i know about Carlow is the gates on the main road leading up to some house/castle that have been cemented up as part of the wall. Its on the road to Dublin on the waterford side of Carlow. The story is about the owner never being able to close/lock the gates. Even now, the gates are "open" despite being cemented up.

Someone local will know the history behind it etc.

thats shankill castle. the real story behind the gates that never close is in the mid 18th century it was deemed more trendy to have a much larger, tree lined avenue as an entrance, so they built one and closed off the original entrance. then in the 60s - or whenever the council built the kilkenny road - the council decided to cement the gates as a security measure. LeinsterParanormal have been down there before as part of KCLRs The UnExplained show. Its a nice place, but theres nothing paranormal going on there. We will be featuring Shankill Castle though in Haunted Kilkenny (which'll be started after Haunted Carlow is finished)

I read that the main shopping centre in Carlow was haunted. I haven't been to it so don't know the name, but from what I remember it's the one with the Jack Jones shop? This was mentioned in the 'Ghosts' megathread in this forum.

Yes, there'll be one, if not two chapters in the book on Carlow Gaol/Carlow Shopping Centre/Thompsons. We were in there many times, including once with KCLR. You can hear the phantom door slam on this: http://www.radiocrackle.com/v2/index.php?id=449 . There was no-one in the place except for those present on the recording, all of who where int he same room. (the door slam sound is a few minutes into the recording. The recording itself is KCLRs summary of the night)

Carlow shopping centre used to be the Carlow jail. The unit beside the carphone warehouse was the hanging cell!

the book Haunted Carlow (which this thread was for) is being launched on June 11th 2011 in Carlow. Dr. Ciarán O'Keeffe has written the foreword and will be speaking at the launch. There'll also be free food, wine and some music.

You can book tickets for the launch here or pre-order the book here.
