I remember being to ls that there is a max amount of alcohol youcan legally have in a private home,

it dates back to the time of shebeens.

out of curiosity, what is/was this limit.

now.. it is possible that this piece of legislation has been done away with.

i was gonna ask over on the legal forum, but i thought some of the guys and gals in here might know

If someone calls to your door saying they're the Drink Inspector checking how much you have in the house, don't let them in. Keep that in mind and you'll be fine.

Not quite the same thing, but I thought this was interesting:

Section 6 of the Spirits (Ireland) Act 1854:
As to Spirits in transit or Process of Removal from one Place to another, it shall and may be lawful for any County Inspector, Sub-Inspector, Head or other Constable of Constabulary, to demand from any Person having in his Custody or Possession any Spirits in any Quantity whatsoever exceeding One Gallon a proper Permit or Certificate authorizing the Removal of such Spirits, and on the Production of any such Permit or Certificate to endorse the same with his own Name, together with the Place, Date, and Time of such Endorsement; and in case no Permit or Certificate shall be produced, or any Permit the Limitation of which shall have expired, it shall be lawful for such County Inspector, Sub-Inspector, Head or other Constable, to seize such Spirits, together with the Vessel containing the same, and the Horse or other Cattle, and Cart or other Carriage, used in the Removal thereof, and to arrest the Person in whose Possession or Custody the same shall have been found, and to convey him, as soon as conveniently may be, before a Justice of the Peace, to be dealt with as herein directed; and the Person in whose Possession or Custody such Spirits shall have been found without such Permit or Certificate, or with any Permit the Limitation of which shall have expired, shall be liable—

For the First Offence, to a Penalty not exceeding Five Pounds nor less than Twenty Shillings, or to be imprisoned, with or without Hard Labour, for a Term not exceeding Three Months nor less than One Month:

And for the Second and every subsequent Offence, to a Penalty not exceeding Ten Pounds nor less than Forty Shillings, or to be imprisoned as aforesaid for a Term not exceeding Six Months nor less than Two Months.
Being caught with 5L of spirits without written permission carried potential jail time.

Does it count if some of those 5 litres are inside you :)

I remember reading the limit on beer once before, though it might have been UK law, it was a ridiculous amount but I think at one stage I got close to it when I had loads of homebrew in the house.

For the record, it's not a shebeen thing, it's a illicit distilling thing. I couldn't find anything in the delightfully-named Refreshment Houses (Ireland) Act 1860 about keeping booze in unlicensed premises. Though I liked this provision:
Every Person licensed to sell Wine, Spirits, Beer, Cider, or any other fermented or distilled Liquors by Retail, to be drunk or consumed on the Premises, who knowingly harbours or entertains, or suffers to remain in the Place wherein he carries on his Business, any Constable during any Part of the Time appointed for his being on Duty, unless for the Purpose of quelling any Disturbance or restoring Order, shall for every such Offence be liable to a Penalty not exceeding Twenty Shillings.

Unsurprisingly, Ireland's drink laws have been under continuous revision and updating. In fact, parts of the 1854 Spirits Act are still live.
